With Paul Lambert restructuring the current crop of the side once again, he seems to have dipped into a big European pond of unheard of players just waiting to get picked up by a bigger team and showcase their talents. This is what Paul Lambert has done since day one as a manager, even when managing Norwich, where he picked up the unknown likes of Andy Pilkington. With so many new players through the revolving doors over the past two years, it seems Paul Lambert may finally be happy with what he has available to him. But their will always be flops, bargains and a star or two. Here is a rundown on my ideas…
The Star- Ashley Westwood– He showed absolute sublime skill and ability to make such a great impression in his debut Premier League season. Every game he impressed me, with the stats backing-up his performances. Since day one I said that, ” He will be an international for England one day,” and I believe with a stellar second season in a Villa shirt he will be onto that plane to Rio – if England qualify that is…
The Flop- Antonio Luna– Although I rated him in a previous version of “From Villa Park”, many people who follow Spanish football have since told me that on the defensive front he is decent, but going forward he is not the best – with Joe Bennett it was the exact opposite last season. Although I hope he proves me wrong, Luna will need time to settle into the English physical game, so maybe his first season may not set the big clubs chasing after him or a call up to the Spainish national side.
The Bargain- Aleksander Tonev– Tonev was cheap as chips compared to the signings teams like Spurs have made in the off-season. But Tonev does seem a very naturally gifted player. He can use both feet, something our current wingers cannot do. He can have a good crack at goal and his goals show that. He has a good delivery on him, too. Stan Petrov holds Aleksander in high regard so I hope he is indeed a bargain because Martin Petrov, fellow Bulgarian compatriot, didn’t do too well in the Premier League.
