Arsenal just launched our new away kits, which would look great on Denilson and Andre Santos given their Brazilian roots and the abundance of yellow on the jersey. Fortunately we will never have to see either of them wear that this season.
Anyway, so now Arsenal have got their house in order before they embark on their Indonisian tour – kind of.
Season tickets all sold out, new kit and merchandising are all ready to go on sale, tickets are on sale for the Emirates Cup to be played on their return , and £25m in deadwood have been dispatched to the far-flung corners of the world. All of Arsenal’s finances have been sorted before a ball’s been kicked in anger , and our £70m warchest is still safely intact, tucked up under Arsene Wenger’s four poster bed. At least someone is sleeping well.
As Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and United begin securing their transfer targets to improve their squads, not be outdone by the other top teams, the ever wily Arsene Wenger has moved swiftly and firmly in securing Ya Ya Sanongo on a free from Auxerre. Yes, we have known that deal has taken place for a while now, but what other transfer do you want me to talk about?
Not long ago I passed a house in Holland Park Ave, homes to the rich and famous if you are not native to London. There was a house on sale for £5.6m which I really liked, so I put in an offer for it , It really impressed everyone around me, including impressing the hell out of my accountant, who informed me that I could not afford it. Of course not, which is way my offer was for only £500k, which must have given the owners a good chuckle at the pittance on paper.
There is a world of difference between bidding on something and seriously trying to buy it, which is why I am sure that all of these links between Arsenal and numerous big name players have not resulted in any purchases; they are pure PR. It’s funny, Wenger can soon get rid of nine or ten players a bit lively, every rumoured sale by Arsenal has resulted in the sale of the player , yet not one purchase has manifested itself. So we can unload players like we’re tossing rubbish but we can’t buy new stuff?
The activity of Gooners on Twitter does make for some great reading. It’s been like watching some dreadful romcom, where the geek has fallen in love with Jennifer Aniston with no chance of getting her. Is Higuain our Jennifer Aniston?
Watching Gooners debate and argue about signing the likes of Lewandowski, Rooney, Jovetic and now Suarez is almost comical when it stops being pathetic – at least the Geek sometimes gets the girl, while us Gooners are left with our pants down.
Higuain was a shoe-in, Fellaini a massive possibility , Williams too expensive now, Barry is a formality, but yet still Ya Ya is the only one we have brought in to fill all the gaps left by Wengers wasters. I sure hope he can play a little CB, DM, to go along with his poaching.
Why is there so much mystery in everything Arsenal does except when we are actually paying for it?
When we still had some big name players worth selling it was never a secret that they were going; Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Emmanuel Adebayor and of course Robin van Persie, our most recent well-touted departure. The world and its wife knew when they were going, but again when we are supposedly buying players, ha, we Gooners have to live off of the scraps of useless imformation dreamed up and regurgitated by each other, while Skybet earn a crust betting on the rumours started by their own betting patterns – oh, we’re being had people! You only have to read Twitter to feel the pain of thousands of fellow Gooners as they live and breathe on any hint of a rumour that Arsenal might somehow break with our current tradition and actually buy some Premiership players.
While I have not stopped complaining about Wenger, I do have a funny feeling that something big is about to emerge at the Emirates – it has to. If something drastic doesn’t happen, judging by the way Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea have added a few pieces to solidify their line-ups, we are going to struggle to compete with them, let alone the Manchester Clubs .
Although Arsenal finished the season with a flourish that nicked fourth, we were actually awful in a lot of those games, especially against the already relegated QPR.
Every season has now become Arsenal’s defining season – well this one is for sure ! So I am more than hopeful that Wenger and Ivan Gazedis can finally see what we can see and rescue Arsenal from the on-coming oblivion .
