Reports from Chris Mortensen and ESPN indicate that the New York Giants are closing in on a long term deal for star wide receiver Victor Cruz.
Cruz was a restricted free agent and recently signed a one year tender worth $2.879 million.
However, Cruz, who missed most of the Giants off-season programs in the dispute, is looking for a long-term big money contract. The 26-year-old Cruz came out of nowhere to be one of the most productive receivers in the NFL, and did it on what was basically a cheap rookie try-out contract. He is now looking to be paid in line with other top receivers in the NFL.
The report from Mortensen indicates that the parameters of a long term deal have been agreed by the parties, but they now need to work out the details, including bonus structure, and certain parts of the contract language. Sources close to the team indicate that they expect the details will be ironed out before the start of Giants training camp.
Cruz has led the Giants in receiving in each of his two years with the team. In 2011 he had 82 receptions for 1536 yards (a team record) and 9 touchdowns. He added 21 receptions for 269 yards and 1 touchdown in the playoffs, helping the Giants to win the Superbowl. Last season Cruz had 86 receptions for 1092 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Given this news it will appear that Giants fans and teammates can expect to see many years of Cruz salsa dancing in the endzone for the G-Men.
