Marcus Lattimore was looking like one of, if not the best, running back in the NCAA last October, when it all came crashing down for the South Carolina Gamecocks star. A horrific injury suffered in a game October 27th against Tennessee tore up his knee and left him lying on the field in pain. It was a horrific site and many feared that his football career was over. Lattimore though has been determined to rehab and come back to the NFL. The once sure-fire first rounder fell to the fourth round and was taken by the San Francisco 49ers.
Lattimore has continued his work, and even got in some light running at San Francisco’s Organized Team Activities. However, don’t expect Lattimore to be ready to start the NFL season. The running back confirmed on Saturday that he would not be ready to practice at 49ers training camp, and likely would not be practicing with contact until half way through the NFL season.
“I did a lot this offseason,” Lattimore said. “I’ve been running sprints, got a chance to get in there with the guys a little bit — that felt good. I probably won’t do training camp. And I’m on course with the trainer and the doctor to get a chance to practice mid-season and see what happens.”
Lattimore will likely start the season on the 49ers PUP (physically unable to perform) list, which would mean he wouldn’t count against the team’s roster. He hopes to return this season, but really it wouldn’t surprise many if he sat the entire year and got fully healthy for the 2014 season.
