Flames Trade Tanguay, Sarich to Avs for Jones, O'Brien

Alex Tanguay is headed back to Denver.  The Calgary Flames have traded the left wing back to the organization where he started his career, and scored two goals in game 7 of the 2001 Stanley Cup Final, along with defenceman Corey Sarich for winger David Jones and defenceman Shane O’Brien.

“This trade adds needed size up front and grit on the back end while also allowing us to get younger.” said Flames General Manager Jay Feaster in a statement. “We like the fact that Jones plays a north-south game, drives hard to the net, kills penalties and is a right hand shot. O’Brien is a hard guy to play against, knows how to get under the skin of the opposition and stands up for his teammates. We are pleased to add both of these players to our organization.”

Tanguay scored 11 goals and 27 points in 40 games for the Flames last season.  He spent the first six years of his career in Colorado before being traded to the Flames.  He spent time in Montreal, and Tampa as well, before signing with the Flames as a free agent prior to the 2010-11 season.  The 33-year-old has 3 years left on his contract with an annual cap hit of $3.5 million.

Sarich is a 14 year NHL veteran, who is mostly known for his defensive game.  He had just 2 points for the Flames last season.  The 34-year-old defenceman has 1 year remaining at a cap hit of $2 million.

In Jones the Flames receive a winger who really struggled in Colorado this season.  He scored just 3 goals and 9 points in 33 games this season for Colorado.  The previous two years he had scored 20 goals and 27 goals respectively.  The 28-year-old has 3 years remaining on his contract at 4 million per season.

In Shane O’Brien the Flames get a 29 year old defensive defenceman, who is known for his physical game, and has dropped the gloves from time to time.  The 29 year old defenceman has 2 years left on his contract at $2 million per season.
