Fuel it Up Sonoma: Road Racing, Trouble with Teammates, and Daytona Renovations

Welcome to “Fuel It Up”!  The racing world is chock full of intriguing stories, but sifting through them to get a good general sense of the landscape can be challenging.  In Fuel It Up, I take the biggest, more interesting storylines and present them to you in a quick, compact 300-words-or-less format.

The winner of this week’s paint scheme award goes to Tony Stewart and his No. 14 Mobil 1/Bass Pro Shop Chevrolet.  Special mention to Ron Fellows who will drive the No. 33 Canadian Tire Chevrolet……………  Is there trouble in the Roush Fenway camp?  Teammates Greg Biffle, last week’s winner at Michigan, and Carl Edwards may not be seeing eye to eye after last Sunday’s race.  Edwards was a little upset with Biffle for not slowing down to allow Edwards to clean some debris that was on his car.  “It’s his job (as a teammate) to help me”, Edwards was quoted as saying after the race.  Biffle said he was too far out in front and if he slowed down to allow Edwards to catch up he would be putting a potential victory at risk……………  Sprint Cup drivers Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski, and Greg Biffle were among more than 800 people who attended the funeral service for NASCAR driver Jason Leffler on Wednesday……………   Daytona International Speedway announced plans to overhaul its front grandstands and demolish the backstretch grandstands.  The renovations will reduce the seating capacity at the track from 147,000 to 101,000 and cost $400 million.  Construction will begin after the Coke Zero 400 in July and should be completed by 2016……………  This Sunday is the first road course race of the season.  The 1.99 mile course and has 10 turns.  Road course experts Ron Fellows and Canadian Jacques Villeneuve are expected to join the starting field……………  Last year’s winner Clint Bowyer hopes to repeat his performance from a year ago but will have his hands filled with challengers named Marcos Ambrose, Tony Stewart, and Juan Pablo Montoya…………… Jeff Gordon leads all drivers with 5 victories at Sonoma.  Gordon also holds the fastest lap record with a speed of 94.325 established in 2005……………  Darrell Waltrip will serve as the Grand Marshall for the Toyota Save Mart 350 on Sunday……………  The weather forecast for Sunday for Sonoma calls for cloudy skies with a high temperature around 78.
