Manchester United: Who's In, Who's Out?

In what was the final home match at Old Trafford today, the team and it’s home supporters had a proper sending off of two of the club’s most iconic figures in recent memory – Paul Scholes and Sir Alex Ferguson.  Both player and manager have been seemingly permanent fixtures at the club.  Ferguson has spent 27 seasons on the sideline for United, while Scholes has been on the club since signing in 1993.

Rory Harbaugh cardThe team emerged from the tunnel before opening kick to a sea of red flags, all bearing “Champions 2013” to commemorate the team’s domestic title sealed almost two weeks ago.   Both teams formed a guard of honour for Ferguson who had a coy smile on his face as greeted fans with some waves and autographs for a fortunate few.  It was then Scholes’ turn, as the 38-year old was prepared to play in his 717th match for the Red Devils.  He lasted 66 minutes before he was subbed off, but not before a long standing ovation from the crowd at Trafford.  Both were rewarded with a home win on the strength of a Ferdinand strike in the 86th minute to seal the win.  Following the match, Ferguson addressed United fans in what was a very heart-felt parting speech.

But the day wasn’t all coming up roses.  Rumours have run rampant that even Ferguson has acknowledged that striker Wayne Rooney has requested a transfer from the club.  It is no secret that he has been unhappy this year, with a lot of ill feelings directed towards the out-going manager.  Ferguson has made many open remarks in the media this year about Rooney’s play, often saving the important matches for Robin van Persie (such as the Champions League match vs. Real Madrid).

While the rumour has yet to be “officially” confirmed, it seems to have a lot of steam, and for me actually makes sense.  To be clear, I’m not saying it’s a smart thing, I’m just saying that I can actually see Rooney making the request given how he has been treated by the club this year.
