The 1st round of the NFL Draft goes tonight, but we already have word of who the first pick in the draft will be.
The Kansas City Chiefs who hold said pick will be taking Central Michigan Left Tackle, Eric Fisher. Fisher is listed at 6’7″, 306 lbs.
This is a bit of a surprise pick as Fisher does not come from one of the bigger schools, however strong showings at the Senior Bowl, NFL Combine and on his pro day have had him rocket up the board from a mid-first round prospect to the very top of the draft. He has overtaken Texas A&M’s star tackle Luke Joeckel who many mock drafts had as the first overall pick as late as yesterday.
Fisher was a 2 star recruit out of high school, and could not get a scholarship to a big ten school, and so attended Central Michigan. He is proof that a young prospect can persevere through hard work both on and off the field, and to never give up on your dreams.
The pick may also smooth the way for a trade of current LT Branden Albert. Talks between the Chiefs and Miami Dolphins were said to be in advanced stages as of yesterday.
A run of lineman is expected in the draft, with DE Ezekiel Ansah, of BYU; Defensive Tackle Star Lotulelei of Utah, and Defensive End Bjoern Werner, of Florida State also ranked as top prospects.
The Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, and Detroit Lions, have the 2nd through 5th picks respectively.
Another interesting storyline tonight concerns who will be the first Quarterback taken in the draft. Geno Smith of West Virginia, Matt Barkley of USC, and Ryan Nassib of Syracuse are all vying for that honour. The Buffalo Bills (8th overall) are in desperate need of a QB and have hired Nassib’s former head coach Doug Marrone to be their head coach next season. Will the Bills take the Syracuse product at 8? or go for another QB? or wait til later in the draft to get their next signal caller?
The 2nd and 3rd rounds of the draft go tomorrow and the 4th through 7th rounds on Saturday. The draft will be televised on ESPN and the NFL Network.
