Richard Sherman, Adderall, and the Man Who Stole Singletary's '50'

Welcome back to Quick Slantthe column that sorts through hundreds of headlines and brings you only the best, most interesting and downright stupid the NFL has to offer.  The NFL is a smorgasbord of awesome storylines; some are analytical, others are critical, and some are just down right stupid.  It’s the stupid ones I live for – they make my day.  I try to offer my own take on the story in as few words as possible – some of us have a wife, kids and a job and don’t have time to read 5000+ word novels!  So, without further ado, I give you today’s version of Quick Slant:

Former NFL receiver Sam Hurd faces a $10mill fine, up to life in prison and the disgrace of being yet another guilty party involved in drugs and trafficking.  It looks like Sam is ready to plead “guilty” in court, in hopes of some leniency.  Really, even the basement salaries in the NFL are nothing to scoff at, so why the need to deal on the side?  Old habits die hard, I suppose…… After two decades, someone either had the gonads or else the team finally caved in letting a Bears player wear Mike Singletary’s #50.  James Anderson is the guy who feels it necessary to provoke a hornet’s nest – oh, don’t think most Bears fans will be happy about this, not one little bit…… JaMarcus Russell, who I discussed in yesterday’s column, feels he’s on the right track to getting back in shape.  The problem is that most teams’ responded that the track is a little longer than he assumed – essentially, you’re less fat, but you’re still fat.  No, literally, they told him to lose more weight and come back and see us……Why some are just now arriving at the fact that Kevin Kolb’s contract with the Bills spells “back-up role” is just beyond me.  Kolb himself went on record saying he was in Buffalo to “Win the Superbowl” – he was obviously heavily medicated.  Not even Buddy Nix would think to himself – okay, we need a franchise quarterback.  Hey, here’s an idea; let’s go with a guy who was replaced by Carson Palmer!……. I’ll leave you with some lunacy – Just when we thought Richard Sherman couldn’t be more hated, we’re proven wrong – again.  The Seahawks’ corner went on record saying, “Half the league uses Adderall“.  Even Brady Quinn, who isn’t even on the team yet, bitch-slapped him.  You’ll remember Sherman successfully appealed a positive test last year…… In keeping with the Sherman-Adderall story, the NFL hit back fast and fierce, releasing a strongly worded statement.  Here’s a taste: “More importantly, his comments are irresponsible, as they ignore the serious medical risks and documented public health crisis associated with the improper use of Adderall and similar drugs.”  In other words, “Go play in heavy traffic”.

That does it for today.  Check back tomorrow and I’ll have sifted through the day’s headlines and give you what you need to know.
