You and I both know footy is filled with fantastical storylines, embellished headlines and completely fabricated news. Football is at a pivotal point in many ways – scandals, match-fixing, rampant racism, rioting, and then there are the on-the-pitch troubles as well. Consider the ever-growing “diving culture”, as well as the controversy as to whether to bring in replay and goal-line technology. Jeez, what’s a bloke to do?
My intent for this column is to bring you the day’s best headlines, along with a little wry, honest and critical commentary, in as compact a manner as I can muster.
Right, here are today’s headlines:
Arsenal’s Tomas Rosicky apparently remembered how to play mid as he propelled Arsenal to a close 2-1 win over WBA at the Hawthornes. Rosicky was not so long ago in Arsene Wenger‘s bad books, barely getting time, yet the Frenchman found time for Abou Diaby, who is either hurt or resembling a wounded giraffe on the pitch……It looks like there will be one fewer London sides next season as QPR gave up a late goal to Wigan, who is in a fight with the aforementioned for the crappiest team in the Premiership. Try as they may, Reading will be damned if either takes their crown! In fairness, QPR were playing the latter stages with ten men boys……In an astonishing bit of analysis, Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas has claimed that it will be a tight race for third and fourth spot. Ummm, yeah, everyone has known that for about a month now, and it worries me that he is just now realizing that……Not to be outdone, Chelsea’s Rafael Benitez believes picking a good starting line-up is important in Chelsea‘s remaining games. I’m so happy that the manager understands his job involves choosing a quality XI, and more impressed that doing so actually made the news. Astonishing……Despite Liverpool‘s much improved form in the second half of this season, the Reds failed to score against West Ham, leaving them nine points out of a qualifying spot. In unrelated news, Luis Suarez has purchased apartments in Munich, Barcelona, Madrid, Turin, and Paris.
