Sports. Honestly. Since 2011

Thirsty Cardinals, Old 'Yellered' and the Other Aaron Rodgers

The NFL is a smorgasbord of awesome storylines.  Some are analytical, others are critical, and some are just down right stupid.  It’s the stupid ones I live for – they make my day.  Welcome to Quick Slant.  I created this column as my way of sharing with you the headlines from around the NFL that I feel are most interesting.  I try to offer my own take on the story in as few words as possible – some of us have a wife, kids and a job and don’t have time to read 5000+ word novels!  So, without further ado, I give you today’s version of Quick Slant:

image005The Arizona Cardinals officially signed Carson Palmer for somewhere around $16mill over 2 years, which is a big cut from his scheduled $12mill he was due to make this year. The upside is that he’s a modest improvement at quarterback. The downside is they are still many, many miles away from sniffing playoffs.  Stay thirsty, my friends……One of the bigger busts of recent memory, Nnamdi Asomugah, has signed with the Niners for a paltry $3mill contract (nothing guaranteed) after a few disappointing sub-par seasons with the Eagles.  His hope is to return to his “old” form.  For me, he has to avoid using the word “old” or their liable to bring him out back behind the shed……Raiders coach Dennis Allen has compared his newly acquired quarterback Matt Flynn to Matt Schaub, and, get this, Aaron Rodgers.  Stop right there, idiot…….Okay, let’s stay with the Raiders. Some prognosticators still believe Oakland would take Geno Smith if available at #3. Wait, wait, wait a damn minute.  Are you telling me they would take a guy even though they have a guy they believe is the next Aaron Rogers? Just, wow……I’ll leave you with a bit of “Are you friggin’ serious” news.  It appears the Brian Urlacher saga(s) is not yet over with the Bears.  Chicago‘s brass said that a return isn’t out of the question. Wha?  Huh?  They all but “Old Yellered” him a few weeks ago, now the door to the barn is open?  Pshaw!  Brian, best get out of Chicago, but don’t forget a deep dish on your way out.

That does it for today.  Check back tomorrow and I’ll have sifted through the day’s headlines and give you what you need to know.
