The NFL is a smorgasbord of awesome storylines. Some are analytical, others are critical, and some are just down right stupid. It’s the stupid ones I live for – they make my day. Welcome to Quick Slant. I created this column as my way of sharing with you the headlines from around the NFL that I feel are most interesting. I try to offer my own take on the story in as few words as possible – some of us have a wife, kids and a job and don’t have time to read 5000+ word novels! So, without further ado, I give you today’s version of Quick Slant:
I’ve always kinda backed Tony Romo, whether it’s a result of feeling sorry for the hate mail he gets, or because he’s really not as bad as some make him out to be. But today, not even I can figure out why the hell Jerry Jones signed off on a $108 six-year extension! That is just beyond stupid……After playing hard to get with the basement of the AFC East (Bills and Jets, in case you didn’t know), Fred Davis is back with Washington. He tested the waters and realized they were too, umm, pissy, and headed back to the nation’s capital to bask in RGIII‘s media lights……Word out of Buffalo is that the team are looking at Kevin Kolb. This is a game we’ve seen in Western New York before. A franchise quarterback he is not, so stop trying to throw hail marys!……Rob Gronkowski says he’d accept a gay teammate. So now we know the mystery man who is apparently ready to step forward is from the Patriots. Not that there’s anything wrong with it……The Raiders are looking to land Matt Flynn, which seems to now be inevitable. Of course that sucks for Carson Palmer, who is refusing a pay cut. I hear the USFL is looking for quarterbacks……Communication between coaches and players via wireless mics during the game is extremely important, but teams are complaining with increased regularity. And to make matter worse, the Federal Communications Commission is wanting to auction off the airwaves currently used by the NFL to cell phone carriers, which would force the league to use less desirable air waves. Essentially, they’d be taking a step back a few years……I’ll leave you with a bit from the draft. To no one’s surprise, most analysts have the SEC as the most represented conference in the first round. ESPN’s Todd McShay has 11 going in the first round.
