While the baseball season is mere weeks away now, that doesn’t mean the sport is dormant. There are still headlines, very intriguing ones, that are still worth of discussion. Welcome to Warm Up Tosses, the column that looks to bring you the most important, interesting headlines from around the baseball world in one neat, compact 300-word-or-less bundle. Without further ado, I bring you today’s Warm Up Tosses:
In watching the Toronto Blue Jays play the New York Yankees in a spring training game, J.A. Happ looked solid in his start. In all honestly I’m starting to really wonder about Colby Rasmus. I can’t help but wonder where this kids head is at. Maybe a clean haircut will bring a change in attitude with him……Speaking of the Yankees, they have a catcher situation that needs to be addressed and I wonder if they are starting to regret trading Jesus Montero for Micheal Pineda. Pineda is still recovering from shoulder surgery and won’t be back until sometime in June, while Jesus walks on water as we all know……Mariano Rivera has announced that 2013 will be his final season, and the entire AL East outside of New York has planned a parade. Details to follow…..Ken Griffey Junior has outspokenly stated that baseball needs more young fans, and that he wasn’t shocked that Cooperstown‘s doors were closed to new recruits. Though he was quick to add that Craig Biggio got a raw deal – as raw as sushi, I agree!
And to add some international flavour to Warm Up Tosses…
I caught the highlight of the World Baseball Classic game between Team Canada and Team Mexico, and that may have been the best baseball fight I have ever watched. Who says hockey skills don’t translate to other sports? Chris Robinson of Team Canada rocked Mexican Outfielder Eduardo Arredondo with a huge punch during the scrimmage. Just what Arnold Leon was thinking about when he threw at Rene Tosoni in a 8-3 game is beyond me. Was it just me or were Sergio Romo and Alfredo Aceves really attempting to look all thugish during this fiasco……Looking at the Mets roster, one has to wonder if the Grand Slam hit by David Wright against team Italy the other night will be the most significant hit of Wright’s season…. Team USA was able to advance to the semifinals after a hard fought (not literally this time) victory over Canada.
