Super Bowl Media Day – this is why we hate the media! Am I right?
They make big deals out of nothing and cause stupid arguments for no other reason but to drum up interest for uninteresting events. I’m sure you all heard Randy Moss say, “I believe I am the greatest Wide Receiver to ever play the game,” which sent the media and Twitter world into a frenzy of people hating on Randy. Come on! You’re smarter than that – it’s a media ploy to get reactions. Of course they asked Moss this question knowing it will cause controversy, just like it always does. Randy’s back was too the wall and he had no choice but to answer the question the way he did – honestly!
If you don’t agree, what should Randy have said? “No, I am not the greatest ever.”? He wants to win the sport’s biggest prize this Sunday, and he wants to be center stage when that happens. Showing confidence and stride is the only way he will get what he wants (the pigskin). Had Moss chosen to be humble and answer the question the way everyone feels he shoud have, that would not help his ego one bit. Players like Moss play better when they are in the spotlight. They get the ego rolling and they become better.
Look, we all know that the statistics say that Jerry Rice is the best ever. Those who watched him play know that Jerry Rice is the greatest of all time. But this doesn’t need to be a controversy. If it helps Randy to play better by believing in himself and having some swagger that he is working to be the best, then that’s what he needs to do.
Last Season it was Eli Manning, who in pre season said, ” I am an NFL elite Quaterback on the same level as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.” Five months later he won the Super Bowl. Should he have said something different? Of course not. How would it have sounded if he’d responded this way; “I am not on the same level as the most elite Quaterbacks.” Far from a confidence boost, right?
This pre season, we heard it again, this time from Joe Flacco who went a step further and said, “I am the best Quaterback in the league.” Look where he is now! I wonder if he actually believes that?
Ray Rice, in his conference on Tuesday, when asked who the best running back in this game is, Rice responded, “Frank Gore is damn good, but if you don’t put yourself as the best, then you aren’t the best, so I’m the best running back there is.” Perfect. You won’t hear the media jump all over him, though.
Some players need to boost their ego – they crave the spotlight, and it helps them. In Randy’s defense, when he set the TD record of 23 in one season he said, “It’s Jerry’s record… he did it in 12 games.” Moss knows what he is doing when he makes these comments. He knows when to be humble and he knows when to be Moss – they are certainly antonyms.
The bottom line is Moss wants to be Moss. He wants the Super Bowl and he wants the ball, and he wants to tell the world that he is the best ever. Whether anyone wants to agree with him or not, he wants to straight up “Moss” the Super Bowl. Don’t be suprised if we see an old fashioned Moss show in the big game, BECAUSE ANYTHING IS MOSS-IBLE!
