Would Michael Vick to the Washington Redskins Work?

Over the week, New York Jets quarterback Michael Vick said that it would be a “dream come true” to play for the Washington Redskins.

For the Redskins, this may seem like perfect timing. Their quarterback situation is in a terrible state, with Robert Griffin III unable to stay healthy and not performing well. Kirk Cousins is not even suiting up for games anymore, and although Colt McCoy has been the best of the group, he has had health issues himself.

But for the Redskins, Vick is not the answer and in fact he would be just another problem. Vick’s contract with the Jets ends this season, which allows him to leave and sign with another team. It can probably be assumed that he would sign with the Redskins if offered.

But why would they not make an offer?

Next year, the Redskins will have three quarterbacks on contract. Griffin is the former second overall pick that has shown potential in the past, and may be able to recapture his spot as a starter over the offseason. McCoy has been a surprise for the Redskins, as he has managed to hold his own as the starting quarterback. He does make many mistakes, and is responsible for two of the Redskins four wins this season.

Griffin has strung together a series of decent performances, and has shown flashes of the player we saw in his rookie season. He and McCoy may have a camp battle to decide who starts next season, and Vick has no room on the roster.

If the Redskins were to sign Vick, they would just be getting and older. Vick has not played a full season since 2006, and has only played 26 games in the past three years. He is an aging player who has struggled recently.

The Redskins need to look towards the future in order to rebuild themselves back into a playoff team. In order to do so, they have to develop their young players. If they sign Vick, then they would have to let go of one of their three much younger quarterbacks.

Vick may bring experience to the table, and may even be better than Kirk Cousins, who was severely disappointing when he took over the starting position, throwing nine interceptions compared to his ten touchdowns. But Cousins is a young player and still has time to develop, while Vick has become a journeyman quarterback just trying to find a team to sign him.

Vick will most likely end up retiring next year, as it is probable that he will not be signed. But he does have a chance to still play in the NFL. A team like the Buccaneers, Titans or Texans who do not have great quarterback situations may pick him up if they miss out or do not trust Marcus Mariota or Jamies Winston. He may also possibly end up resigning with the Jets as they do not have many options other than of Geno Smith, who has had his share of well-documented problems.

The Jets quarterback has reached the end of his career and at this point is going to have to take any offer he can get if he wants to keep playing in the NFL. Unfortunately for the DMV native, the Redskins will not be that team. He will most likely end up on a team that either misses out on a top prospect or one without a strong starter that he might have a chance to beat out in camp.

Either way, Vick’s career is all but over. Michael Vick and the Washington Redskins have no future with one another.
