Jake McDonough to come out with 2nd Iowa State song

Four years ago, Jake McDonough and the 816 Boyz released a song that featured Iowa State Football. Now, McDonough says he will do it again for the new era.

Four years ago, in the early part of his senior season at Iowa State, Jake McDonough and the 816 Boyz released Comin Thru – a rap about Cyclone football.

McDonough did the beats to the song and the 816 Boyz (a group that features big-time rapper, Tech N9ne) did the rapping. The piece was extremely well received.

“The feedback from the first song was all positive! It was crazy to see how well it was received by fans, players and coaches,” McDonough said. “I had fans of Texas, even Iowa tell me how cool the song was, so that tells me how big it actually was!”

New Coach Matt Campbell

Now, in the dawn of a new era, Jake McDonough plans to put out a new song prior to Matt Campbell’s first game at Jack Trice Stadium.

“I’m excited to announce that there will be another song this year and I hope Cyclone Nation will make it as big as the last one was,” McDonough said. “With the new coaching staff and new era of cyclone football, I felt it was only right to do something big for the team and the fans.”

“I’ve made a few tracks so far,” McDonough said. “Each one has their own style to give the artist options to choose from.”

That’s right, McDonough is talking to multiple artists, not just the 816 Boyz. Although he would not say who else was in discussion with him, he promised it would be huge. McDonough got to work with some pretty famous names in the industry to make “Comin Thru.”

“Working with these guys has been a dream come true. It’s crazy to go from listening to these guys on my iPod to calling these guys family,” He said. “They’re great guys to be around and they are a huge part of my life now.”

Comin Thru was played at Jack Trice Stadium during multiple games in 2012. It was used to get players as well as the fans that arrived early, pumped for the game. However, it was never played as the tunnel walk song.

The Intro song

The intro beat for the past few Iowa State seasons has been Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. At least one journalist has had enough with it.

That being Chris Williams, publisher of CycloneFanatic. He has said many of times, that “Smoke on the Water” is just plain awful. He was one of the first to question Campbell about entrance music when he came to Iowa State.

Campbell did confirm the 70’s hit would not remain the entrance song. He said that the Cyclones would look in the way of rap, a WWE theme song like Stone Cold Steve Austin’s, as long as it’s “cool.”

What better place to look for an entrance song than this new piece from Jake McDonough? A type of song that recruits listen to, and of course it’s unique to Iowa State.

“I definitely would love to hear [it] be the new entrance song and am definitely going to see what I can do to get it played,” McDonough said.

Like it says above, no details have really been released on the new track, however McDonough concluded by saying to “be on the lookout for a preview coming soon!”
