Pirates acquire J.A. Happ, Michael Morse in pair of late deals

The following press release come from the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball concerning their trade with the Seattle Mariners just hours before baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline on Friday afternoon. The move adds another arm to the Pirates rotation as they fight for a spot in the MLB playoffs. The Pirates currently occupy the first wild card spot, and sit just 5.5 games back of the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central Division.

Pirates Acquire Pitcher J.A. Happ from Seattle

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired left-handed pitcher J.A. Happ (pronounced Jay) from Seattle in exchange for minor league pitcher Adrian Sampson. The announcement was made by Pirates Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

The 32-year-old Happ went 4-6 with a 4.64 ERA (108.2ip/56er) and 82 strikeouts in 21 appearances (20 starts) this year for the Mariners.

Happ has a career record of 55-59 with a 4.29 ERA (949.1ip/452er) and 790 strikeouts in 185 games (160 starts) between Philadelphia (2007-10), Houston (2010-12), Toronto (2012-14) and Seattle (2015). Last year with the Blue Jays he recorded double digit win totals for the second time in his career after going 11-11 with a 4.22 ERA.

The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 25-man active roster when Happ joins the team.

Slugger, dealt from Marlins to Braves on Thursday, heads to Pittsburgh for Tabata

The Pirates acquired first baseman/outfielder Michael Morse and cash considerations from the Dodgers for outfielder Jose Tabata prior to Friday’s 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline.

Morse, 33, was acquired by Los Angeles in Thursday’s 13-player blockbuster between the Dodgers, Braves and Marlins, and the Dodgers designated him for assignment later that day. He was hitting .213/.276/.313 with four homers in 53 games with the Marlins.

Tabata, 26, was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh last month and outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis on June 30. He hit .289/.341/.289 in 27 games for the Pirates this season.
