Dolphins Extend Ryan Tannehill Through 2020

Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, fresh off his best season as a pro, signed a six-year extension with the team through 2020.

The Miami Dolphins appear to be set at the quarterback position for the time being.

After months of rumors, the team announced Monday they had signed Ryan Tannehill to a multi-year extension through 2020. The six-year deal is worth a total of $96 million with $45 million in guaranteed money. Tannehill was about to enter the fourth and final year of his rookie contract signed upon entering the league in 2012.

The Texas A&M product’s third season in the league was undoubtedly his most prolific. He was one of 11 quarterbacks in the league to throw for over 4,000 yards and added 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, both career bests. From a fantasy standpoint, he was the ninth best quarterback in the league. His efforts nearly enabled the Dolphins to erase a a six-year playoff drought but for the second consecutive season they finished with an 8-8 record.

The Dolphins have added quite a few targets for him to throw to in 2015 both via the draft and free agency including DeVante Parker, Jordan Cameron and Kenny Stills. That said, a few previous members of Miami’s pass catching corps signed with other teams including Mike Wallace (Vikings) and Charles Clay (Bills). Wallace was less than impressive though after signing a massive deal with the team in 2013. Miami slapped the transition tag on Clay this offseason but he ended up signing an offer sheet with Buffalo.

This move by the Dolphins will likely have ripple effects as it relates to the contract situations of both Luck and Wilson. After all, Tannehill has yet to appear in the playoffs, yet Wilson has a Super Bowl ring to his name and Luck was one game away from playing in the big game last season. It’s only a matter of time before those two franchise quarterbacks get their massive paydays which will likely smash records.

The next step for Tannehill is to lead this team to the postseason promised land. Miami appears to be upgraded on both sides of the ball, particularly with the big splash free agency signing of Ndamukong Suh. For head coach Joe Philbin, 2015 will be a make or break season and suffice it to say his employment prospects beyond next season largely hinge on if this team is still alive past Week 17.
