Williams Belgian GP Review: Four Podiums in Five races for Bottas

This was supposed to be the race where Williams finally went and challenged the Mighty Mercedes. While that wasn’t the case, Williams still picked up a healthy chunk of points. However, they picked up far less than both Ferrari and Red Bull. Once again, Valtteri Bottas produced a very strong drive to pick up yet more silverware, his fourth piece of the season, whilst Felipe Massa’s luck failed to improve. One positive that Williams can take from this weekend is that they appear to have finally beaten their wet-weather issues, something which plagued them earlier in the year as both drivers got into the top 10 in qualifying. Williams will be hoping for a really good result in Monza, the circuit which on paper suits their car better than any other.

Williams Belgian GP Review

No. 19 Felipe Massa (BRA)

Grid: P9

Race: P13

Massa was cost heavily by the remains of Lewis Hamilton’s tyre on lap 2. This cost him around forty seconds and any points. Without this, he could well have finished in the top four. He was outqualified yet again by his younger team mate and his poor luck cost him yet again. He will need a huge result at Monza, a track where he is popular at of course, being a former Ferrari driver and a track where he has stood on the podium at in the past too.

No. 77 Valtteri Bottas (FIN)

Grid: P6

Race: P3

There wasn’t a huge amount to say about Bottas’ weekend. I suppose in that respect you can say that he quietly got on with the task at hand and responded very well. P6 in the wet is a very good performance, and he quietly got on with the race, having a pretty lonely afternoon bar an easy pass on fellow Finn Kimi Raikkonen. Bottas was my Driver of the Weekend for his excellent performance in both qualifying and in the race.
