Fuel it Up Daytona: The King's Birthday, A.J's hip, and Tough Guys

Welcome to “Fuel It Up”!  The racing world is chock full of intriguing stories, but sifting through them to get a good general sense of the landscape can be challenging.  In Fuel It Up, I take the biggest, more interesting storylines and present them to you in a quick, compact 300-words-or-less format.

The winner of this week’s paint scheme award goes to the #1 Cessna Chevrolet car of Jamie McMurray.  Special mention goes to Brad Keselowski and Greg Biffle……………  Last Word on Sports would like to extend Happy Birthday wishes to the King, Richard Petty who turned 76 this week.  It’s just great to see his smile around the NASCAR circuit.  Let’s hope we keep this racing legend around for another 76 years…………… Another racing Legend, A.J. Foyt has undergone successful hip replacement surgery this past week.  The operation was deemed a success and A.J. is expected to make a complete recovery……………  I just love to listen to the banter between driver and crew.  During last week’s race, Clint Bowyer was racing behind Kyle Busch and Joey Logono when his spotter, Brett Griffin said this,  “Dumb and dumber ahead of you really close.”  Not sure which one is dumb and which one is dumber…………… Denny Hamlin just keeps taking a beating this year.  After another tough wreck last week in Kentucky, Hamlin has passed a concussion test and will once again be behind the wheel of the #11 FedEx Toyota.  Hamlin, who raced last season shortly after knee surgery and is still recovering from a broken back suffered earlier this season, is fast becoming NASCAR’s tough guy……………….. The New Hampshire Motor Speedway will honor the first responders from the Boston Marathon bombings and the Newtown School shooting at the July 14 New Hampshire 301.  A well-earned honor…………… Danica Patrick made the Forbes list of most powerful celebrities.  She was ranked 92……………  NASCAR Sprint Cup moves on to the high bank superspeedway of Daytona for the Coca Cola 400 on Saturday night.  Last season’s winner, Tony Stewart looks for a repeat performance……………   Adam Sandler, Shaquille O’Neil, and Kevin James will serve as Grand Marshalls for the event.   It’s been reported that Sheryl Crow will perform the National Anthem…………..  The Coca Cola 400 is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm Saturday.  The race can be seen on TNT network in the US and TSN in Canada……………  The weather forecast for race time in Daytona calls for partly cloudy skies with high temperatures  reaching the mid 80’s (29 C) and low temperatures in the mid 70’s (24 C).
