WTA Hamburg Day 1 Predictions Including Daria Kasatkina vs Katerina Siniakova

Katerina Siniakova in action ahead of the WTA Hamburg European Open.

Held alongside the men’s event this year, the 2022 WTA Hamburg European Open main draw action kicks off on Sunday. All three matches contain one player who’s been dominant in the head-to-head matches against the other. Will these streaks continue? Who do you think will prevail?

WTA Hamburg Day 1 Predictions

Reka Luca Jani vs Laura Pigossi

Head-to-head: Jani 3-0 Pigossi

Reka Luca Jani defeated Laura Pigossi on clay two years ago, but will the same happen again? The Hungarian is playing her best-ever tennis at the age of 30, pulling off some great ITF runs this year. Her main tour experience is quite scarce though, even compared to Laura Pigossi, who was the runner-up at Bogota in April. Feels like anything can happen here, but it’s Jani who’s been maintaining a steadier level of late.

Maryna Zanevska vs Viktoriya Tomova

Head-to-head: Tomova 3-0 Zanevska

Viktoriya Tomova leads the head-to-head 3-0, but they have never faced each other on clay courts. Maryna Zanevska made plenty of progress since they last played (especially winning that WTA 250 title at Gdynia), but it hasn’t been a great year for the Belgian. In fact, she’s coming into Hamburg on a five-match losing streak. Tomova, who recently made an ITF semifinal in Bastad, could extend her lead against Zanevska here.

Katerina Siniakova vs Daria Kasatkina

Head-to-head: Kasatkina 4-0 Siniakova

Daria Kasatkina will be appearing on the court for the first time since the grass season, where she did well (two quarterfinals) but couldn’t compete at Wimbledon due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players. While Katerina Siniakova has the game to attack her weaker serve, the Czech is also not performing up to her usual standards this year. Kasatkina was brilliant on clay and while some rust cannot be excluded, she’s proven she can regularly get the better over this particular opponent in the past and should find the way to win once she settles her nerves.

Prediction: Kasatkina in 3
