WTA Auckland Quarterfinals Predictions

Jessica Pegula vs Alize Cornet

Head to Head: 1-0 Cornet

Jessica Pegula and Alize Cornet tangle in the quarterfinals of Auckland. Pegula has not dropped a set this tournament and beat Tamara Zidansek comfortably in the second round. Alize Cornet, on the other hand, has not had such an easy road to the quarterfinals. Cornet has had to come back from a set down in both of her previous matches this tournament. In the second round, she came back to beat Petra Martic.

Cornet leads the head to head 1-0, having beaten Pegula in straight sets at the US Open last season. Pegula wlll have to try to hit through the excellent defense/counterpunching ability of Cornet, which will mean that her rally tolerance needs to be top-notch in this match. While Pegula will be able to bag a set, don’t expect her groundstrokes to hold up for two sets. Cornet moves on to the semifinals.

Caroline Wozniacki vs Julia Goerges

Head to Head: 6-4 Goerges

Caroline Wozniacki takes on Julia Goerges in the Auckland quarterfinals. Wozniacki beat Lauren Davis in three sets to reach the quarterfinals. It took a while, but Wozniacki was able to finally wear Davis down. Julia Goerges has not dropped a set this tournament and beat Jil Teichmann in the second round without many issues.

Goerges leads the head to head 6-4, but the two are tied 3-3 on hard courts. Goerges will try to overpower Wozniacki with her huge serve and ground game, while Wozniacki will try to counterpunch and force Goerges to overhit. Given how well Goerges has played this tournament, combined with Wozniacki’s shaky play against Davis, expect Goerges to win a close match here. Goerges advances.
Prediction: Goerges in 3

Amanda Anisimova vs Eugenie Bouchard

Head to Head: never played

Amanda Anisimova and Eugenie Bouchard battle for the right to be in the semifinals of Auckland. Anisimova has not dropped a set this tournament and comfortably beat Daria Kasatkina in the previous round. Bouchard has also not lost a set so far in Auckland and had a straightforward win over Caroline Garcia in her second round match.

These two have never played before. Both players will look to try to control the baseline and play an aggressive style of tennis. Bouchard has done well to reach the quarterfinals, but Anisimova is playing at a higher level and is setting herself up to become the future of tennis. While Bouchard will certainly put up a fight, she needs every ranking point she can get at this point in her career, Anisimova is the better player and it will show here. Anisimova moves on.
Prediction: Anisimova in 3

Serena Williams vs Laura Siegemund

Head to Head: 1-0 Williams

Serena Williams and Laura Siegemund battle for a spot in the semifinals of Auckland. Williams had to come back from a set deficit in her previous match against Christina McHale. However, when Williams got her game going, McHale was no match. Siegemund also had to recover from a set down, as she lost the first set to Coco Gauff. However, she was able to use her variety to come back in that match.

Williams leads the head to head 1-0, with that one win occurring on a hard court in straight sets at Indian Wells. Williams will try to overpower Siegemund, while Siegemund will attempt to frustrate Williams with her varied play. However, Williams is the much player and won’t allow Siegemund to play the match on her terms. Williams advances to the final four.
Prediction: Williams in 2
