After a midweek slate of Challenge Cup matches, NWSL will kick off June with some big time matchups this weekend. The biggest of them all looking at the table is the matchup on Sunday with Gotham FC vs San Diego. Gotham will host the Wave with a crowd of more than 10,000 at Red Bull Arena. The Wave are no strangers to setting attendance records themselves. Now the California star power will attract many New York soccer fans who will see their club that is at the top of the table take on Alex Morgan and the fourth-place wave.

Gotham FC vs San Diego Wave Predictions for Sunday

Gotham FC Current Run of Form

Gotham FC lost for only the second time this season 2-0 against the Kansas City Current on April 30. Since then they have been undefeated in league play. Gotham has been 2-0-2 since May 7 when they beat Chicago away 2-1. After that they had a 0-0 draw at home against Orlando and a 4-1 win on the road against OL Reign. Last weeks draw against Washington secured their place atop the table with 17 points.

San Diego Wave Current Run of Form

San Diego are 2-2-1 in their last five matches in league play. After defeating Angel City in a local derby in Los Angeles 2-0, they had a shock loss at home against a then winless Orlando team. The Wave then fell to the Washington Spirit 3-1 in front of a national TV audience on CBS. San Diego are undefeated in their last three matches after beating beating Kansas City and Houston on the road 2-0 and 3-0 respectfully. This was followed by a 1-1 draw against Portland last week that now has the Wave in fourth place on 16 points.

Gotham vs San Diego Recent Head to Head

Gotham lost both meetings with the Wave in the 2022 season. Both losses saw Gotham fail to register a goal. They were shut out 4-0 on the road and then 3-0 at home. In the away fixture, Alex Morgan scored all four goals for the Wave on her way to a Golden Boot wining season.

Gotham vs San Diego Prediction

With a win against the Wave, Gotham could see themselves remain atop the table for another week. While the news of the record crowd is positive for the club, they have come under some scrutiny for marketing the match as a chance to see Alex Morgan rather then their own club. Regardless most of the New York faithful might be swayed by Gotham’s play if they haven’t already with their recent form. Gotham have a proven goal scorer in Lynn Williams who has equaled Alex Morgan’s five goals so far this year. San Diego does have plenty of talent on paper, but a Gotham win 2-1 seems appropriate. Especially in front of their largest ever home crowd.
