Sporting KC, Rapids play to intense draw

KANSAS CITY – Sporting KC rallied from behind again at home, and both teams had a chance at the doorstep inside the final five minutes to get a winner, but one hit the bar, and the other didn’t get all the way over the line. Spoils were even as the Rapids and Sporting KC play to a 1-1 draw.

For the fifth home match in a row, Sporting Kansas City conceded first, this time inside the first 20 minutes on an unlucky deflection off Graham Zusi. Jon Lewis took a shot the first time that rebounded out to himself off Zusi, and he slotted home from point-blank.

Sporting KC looked shell-shocked for just a moment before getting back into the swing of things. They were looking dangerous when Daniel Salloi cut in from the left-handed side and ripped a curling effort that Yarborough was equal to. Then, in the 40th minute, Gadi Kinda was fouled on the edge of the box, leaving Johnny Russell and Alan Pulido standing over the ball. Russell stepped up and lofted it up and over the wall into the net while Yarborough could only stand and watch.

The Half would end 1-1, as would the match. Sporting KC was the dominant team in the second half, while Colorado looked to hunt on the counter, and keep as many people between Sporting KC and the goal as possible. Sporting’s best chance came just minutes from full-time, where Johnny Russell came onto a ball at the back post.

Russell didn’t seem to get everything on his shot and it was cleared off the line. Minutes later, in stoppage time, the Rapids found themselves on the counter and had played Cole Bassett in all alone but he smashed the ball of the crossbar and out for the final true chance in the match.

Sporting KC are still second in the Western Conference, just two points behind the Seattle Sounders with 40 points. They’ll travel to Los Angeles to face LAFC on Friday, 3 September.

The Rapids sit third in the West with 38 points and have two games in hand on Sporting KC. They will play away to San Jose on Saturday, September 4th.
