Sporting KC adds road game in US Open Cup draw to Minnesota United

Sporting KC roster

CHICAGO – For the fourth time in the last six years, Sporting KC has been drawn against Minnesota United in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The fixture is one of five all-MLS games in the fourth round, with 16 games total being played.

Sporting Draws Minnesota for US Open Cup Again

Sporting has defeated Minnesota on all three previous occasions the pair of sides have met in the cup — firstly in 2014 and 2016 when Minnesota was in the NASL, and then once again in 2017 during Minnesota’s first year as an MLS club.

The fixture, which is set for either June 11 or 12, takes place in the Northern Plains Pool, with the Colorado Rapids taking on USLC side New Mexico United in the other Northern Plains matchup.

Sporting was drawn as the away team, meaning Peter Vermes’ side must now play five straight road games in the month of June, starting on Saturday with the Houston Dynamo and finally ending when Sporting hosts Los Angeles FC on July 3.

If Sporting were to advance past Minnesota, the Round of 16 also takes place on June 18-19, which could bump that number up to six.

The draw comes at a difficult time for Sporting KC, who not only have a host of players currently on the injured list, but will also be losing four players to international duty: Johnny Russell (Scotland), Krisztian Nemeth (Hungary), Nicolas Hasler (Lichtenstein) and Botand Barath (Hungary).

“That’s going to be tough because we are losing great players who have to go to the national team, but thankfully there’s a couple of guys including myself coming back from injury and I think that should help,” said Daniel Salloi on Wednesday. “We have to manage it, other teams have to do it too. It’s going to be a tough month because we don’t play at home, but I think everybody is kind of ready in their head and we’ll try to get the best in June.”
