River Plate Ends a Sweet Run After Losing In The Clubs World Cup
Two weeks of sweetness surround River after beating long-time rival Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores final. But “El Millonario” didn’t live up to the expectations in the CWC with a shocking loss to Al Ain in penalties in the semi-finals.
River was appointed to win the CWC over Real Madrid because the Spanish club is not performing well recently. And after winning their second Copa Libertadores in four years, River looked strong entering the CWC.
But then they choked and let Real Madrid the doors open to win a “Three-Peat”.
Difficult for the Americas
Since the Club World Cup beginnings in 2000, only three teams from the American continent have won the trophy. All of them are Brazilian clubs, plus Corinthians has won it twice (2000, 2012).
However, this event has been a nightmare for the Americas as Europe dominates it almost every year, including the last five tournaments.
This year River had a great chance due to poor the results of UEFA Champions Real Madrid. Though, the Argentinean did not take advantage of it and lost 4-5 in penalties after drawing 2-2 in the full-time.
What’s next?
River let go a unique opportunity, but it’s time to move on and think about the present. The Copa Libertadores 2019 is next on the line and the current champions were placed in the “Group of Death”.
River is in Group A together with International, Alianza Lima and a winner berth from previous rounds.
While River dreams of becoming the first team from Argentina who wins the CWC is over, another race starts in February in the Copa Libertadores kick-off.
