HOUSTON (November 21, 2017)–According to a source, and confirmed by the Seattle Sounders, goalkeeper Stefan Frei will miss leg one of the Western Conference finals tonight against the Houston Dynamo. In his place, backup Tyler Miller will start in between the posts. Frei suffered a hamstring injury in training and will unable to play through it.

Frei has been the clubs steady goalkeeper in the starting line up having played and started in 33 games this season, posting a 13W-9L-11D record. Last year in Seattle’s MLS Cup run, he recorded seven saves, including this miraculous save from a Jozy Altidore header, to send the game into penalty kicks in which the Sounders eventually won out. He received MLS Cup MVP honors for doing so.

Tyler Miller has been the teams primary back up for the last two seasons after being drafted by the Sounders with the 33rd pick in the MLS Superdraft. Miller made one appearance and start for the club this year which ended up in a 4-3 win against D.C United. Last year his first season in MLS, he made his debut away at Real Salt Lake in a 2-1 loss. Later he helped advance the club forward in the Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup with eight saves in regulation and two saves in a penalty shootout to beat Real Salt Lake again. Miller has spent games in the USL affiliate S2 in his two seasons

This will be Miller’s first appearance in a playoff game in his career as last year he was not used in their playoff run.
