The first half was nothing really to write home about. A relatively boring affair with a few true chances. Sporting KC’s best threat came on a Gerso Fernandes shot that was saved by Tyler Deric. Nothing else really troubled the Dynamo backline. For Houston, they were able to make Andrew Dykstra feel a little nervy, but never truly tested him. Gerso Fernandes did pull up with a hamstring issue just at the end of the half though. Gerso tried to go in the second half, but was taken off five minutes into the second half. Daniel Salloi replaced Gerso.

The match was relatively cagey again through the second half. Sporting KC actually put the ball in the back of the net, but Opara was correctly judged to be offside as he headed the ball home. It was by the smallest of margins though. After another scoreless 45 minutes, the match headed to Extra Time.

The Houston Dynamo broke the deadlock in the 93rd minute after Vicente Sanchez beat Jimmy Medranda 1v1, cut up the end-line, and slotted a perfect pass to Alberth Elis. Elis was able to take a few touches and slot it home past Andrew Dykstra.

Sporting KC pushed hard for the equalizer, but on their last chance of the game, Kevin Oliveira couldn’t get the ball past the first man, and then the ball was looped up over everyone. Sanchez ran onto it and into the box, where he earned a Penalty Kick that Andrew Dykstra ended up saving. But the final whistle blew, and Houston Dynamo advanced.

They move on to face the Portland Timbers on October 30th for the first leg of their Western Conference Semi-Finals.

Sporting KC’s season ended at the knockout stage for the fourth year in a row. And for the fourth year in a row, it was on the road, on a goal beyond the 85th minute.
