Earlier in the month, Columbus Crew SC was rumored to make a move for Aberdeen skipper Ryan Jack. But multiple reports have come out and have confirmed (so far) that Jack will remain in Scotland and sign with Rangers.
Columbus Crew SC Lose Race For Aberdeen Captain Ryan Jack
Columbus were reportedly going to land the 25-year-old on a free transfer. His contract expires this summer. But it appears that Ryan could be making his move to the Ibrox, and joining Rangers instead. Looks like a Wil Trapp, Ryan Jack defensive mid pairing was all a fantasy.
A report from hitc.com tells us that a late move from Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha made a late negotiation that persuaded Jack to change his mind. Once again, Jack can move for free, and wouldn’t cost Rangers a thing in terms of a transfer fee.
Another report from The Daily Record states that Jack rejected a ‘Mega Bucks’ deal from Columbus, and will sign the deal after the Scottish Cup Final against Celtic FC. The report tells that the Black and Gold were offering a huge £10,000 ($12,986 USD) a week contract.
Finally, express.co.uk reports that Jack had been warned about leaving Aberdeen. They also report that Jack is to undergo a medical in the next 48 hours. (72 hours when the article was posted on May 21, 2017).
What does this mean for Columbus?
It necessarily isn’t a bad thing. But losing out on a clutch central defensive mid is crucial, considering that Artur is only on loan. Yes, Crew SC has Mohammed Abu, but Jack could provide a strong presence in front of the defense while Trapp could move up the pitch more. Now, Columbus isn’t labeled a “loser” since they missed out. The summer window is coming up soon, and head coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter could have his eye on another potential signing.
Aberdeen are set to play Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final. Columbus travel to Toronto to close out the Trillium Cup rivalry with Toronto FC this coming Friday.
