AEW Dynamite Highlights – Cody Finally Pins Darby Allin (1/1/20)

Aew Dynamite

Happy New Year to the All Elite Wrestling world as the “Homecoming” Edition of AEW Dynamite started off the year in a big way. For those who may have forgotten, records have now reset as the calendar year changes as well. That means that everything is certainly receiving a refresh as AEW enters its second year of being a company. Now, the question is… Did AEW deliver in their first outing of 2020? Here are the highlights.

MJF Lays Out The Sanctions For Cody To Face Him

Maxwell Jacob Friedman and Wardlow made their way to the ring prior to the main event to let the world know what it would take for Cody to finally get his match against MJF. MJF basked in the boos of the crowd as he and his personal bodyguard stood in the middle of the ring. He made it clear and simple as he stood in the ring, making fun of the Jacksonville crowd, starting with their match having to be at the Revolution PPV. Second, Cody had to face a man of his choosing, Wardlow. But not in just a singles match, but a solid steel cage match. The final stipulation would be that MJF could hit Cody 10 times with a belt across the back simply to prove that he is better than him.

The Elite Prove Their Still Elite

Hangman Page is on commentary for this one, which is important to know towards the end. It was The Elite‘s Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks went into six-man tag team action against the team of PAC and the Lucha Bros. It was as fun as you could expect but instead of trying to remember all the action, let’s get to the end. Fenix climbed to the top rope to hit Omega with a picture-perfect roundhouse kick. Instead, he was met with a devastating V-Trigger to completely knock his lights out.

A One-Winged Angel to Fenix and it was all over. An undefeated start of the year for The Elite. Cody made his way down to celebrate and they even invited Hangman to the ring but was met with denial as he said he’d rather not since he did nothing on the night. The troubled Hangman continues to be a difficult one to figure out.

Dynamite of the Night: Cody Gets Win Over Darby Allin Thanks To AA

The rematch of the draw at Fyter Fest in summer of last year led off the show as Cody and Darby Allin officially had their rematch. Much like their first bout, it was down the wire again as there were just minutes to spare before the finish was found. Darby would hit the Coffin Drop onto Cody this time, but it was onto the apron of the ring. Both were on the outside before the match eventually continued. Cody would hit Darby with a Cross Rhodes clean in the middle of the ring but somehow only got a two count as Allin managed to kick out. Darby managed to plant Cody in the middle of the ring and go for the Coffin Drop once again.

Arn Anderson, now the official head coach of the Nightmare Family, proved to be helpful for Cody in match number one as he got on the apron to tell Cody to get his knees up. Cody rolled Darby following the knees to the back to get the win and start his 2020 and The Elite’s 2020 off to a sparkling start. Yet another great match between these two to get AEW off to a hot start this year.

If you thought this week was a loaded show, just you wait. Next week’s “Anniversary” edition of Dynamite could possibly be the most stacked it has ever been. Hangman Page will once again team with Kenny Omega to take on Private Party. Jon Moxley will answer the Inner Circle’s offer to join them. A first-ever match between the Rhodes Brothers and the Lucha Bros will be on tap. A special tribute to Memphis Wrestling Legends, and finally the AEW Women’s Championship match between the champion Riho and Kris Statlander.
