ESPN just released its list of the top 30 wrestlers under 30. It showed that Dominik Mysterio could steal not only Liv Morgan’s heart but also ESPN’s. But what makes Mysterio better than the rest?
Is it the fact that he’s Rey Mysterio’s son? Or is it the mullet? While this choice may be shocking to some, there is no doubt he has been heavily involved in WWE this past year.
Let’s look at how Dominik Mysterio jumped from the number five position on this list last year to number one this year.
Easy to Hate
It’s hard to name someone in the company who is hated more than Dominik Mysterio; there might not be one. But that makes him so good at his job, as he is arguably the biggest heel in the company right now.
The audience doesn’t let him get a word out anytime he puts a microphone to his lips. If he does, we can hardly hear him, and it is most likely some cocky or arrogant remark. He plays the heel role perfectly, from turning on two legends, Edge and his father, Rey Mysterio, to turning on one of the fan favorites, Rhea Ripley, making it even easier for fans to despise him.
Some might say he’s lying, cheating, and stealing like a former Latino Heat had…
Dominik Mysterio’s Improving Skills
Dominik Mysterio found his niche with his character and is where he is now. He has grown immensely since his debut, especially in the past year. It is obvious when a wrestler loves the story they’re in because it comes naturally.
You can tell it’s not forced; maybe they even have fun with it. This makes it easy to get the audience invested. That’s what Mysterio has been doing in this role.
He has improved not only in character development but also in skills. Not going into NXT before going to the main roster was a risky jump for WWE to take. When Mysterio made his main roster debut, he could’ve benefitted from time down there, but he has shown that he can learn and grow independently.
Top Stories
Dominik Mysterio has been involved in some of the top storylines in the past year. The storyline he has had between Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan has been going on for months, but fans still can’t seem to get enough of it.
They have had a variety of matches and segments, yet theirs can still be one of the most anticipated on the card. That is not easy to do because fans get bored of seeing the same thing, but if it is done right, it will create more fan investment.
When Mysterio had his elbow injury in May, he continued appearing on television to keep the stories going. While he plays someone for us to hate on TV, things like that and seeing his consistent improvement shows his dedication to the business. He improved himself and the story by doing this.
The way he has flourished as a heel in the past year makes sense why ESPN can name him the number one wrestler under 30. This shows that it is not only wrestling skills but also the whole persona. Now, we have to see if he can hold the spot for next year.
