Exploring The Next Overseas Destination For WWE

WWE has spread its wings under Triple H’s direction. The company no longer bases its shows primarily within the continental United States.

PLEs have been heading to more foreign destinations. Cities such as Glasgow, Lyon, and Cardiff have been host to some fantastic shows.

Shows that have shown the viability of WWE taking its bigger shows on the road. In a few weeks, Berlin will join the list of shows that have taken place outside of the United States.

The crowd will be fantastic without a doubt, and the card should be great, but it does beg the question of who will be next. WWE will want to continue their recent string of international shows but where will they go next?

Below are some great options.

Milan, Italy

WWE is going to keep going to Europe and, when they do, Milan would be a great option. Italy has yet to host a PLE and now is the time.

WWE has had Raw episodes take place in the country and the crowds have always been scorching hot. There is no reason to think that they would not erupt when a PLE comes to town.

Milan, being the fashion nucleus of the planet, would be a great city to host a show. Extravagant entrances/ring gear is part of the WWE way of life.

Wrestlers like Seth Rollins, Cody Rhodes, and Charlotte Flair would be in their element.

Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico is a country, and it has a culture that has a deep-rooted history with professional wrestling. The Lucha Libre style of working is life in the country.

It is a flashy style that has become popular the world over. It is also a country that has fans who are crazy about professional wrestling.

Bringing a PLE, maybe even one of the big four, would be a way to work both of these factors into the show. Mexico City is also home to one of the largest outdoor stadiums in North America.

Estadio Azteca can fit over 80,000 screaming fans into the stadium. That is the type of numbers WWE loves to boast about when having shows like the Royal Rumble, SummerSlam, or even WrestleMania.

This is something that the company needs to pull off.

Stockholm, Sweden

If WWE is serious about branching out into other international markets, then an untapped resource is waiting slightly to the north of where they have been this year. Sweden is not a country that gets a lot of love when it comes to WWE.

Outside of some live events, there hasn’t been a big show brought to Stockholm. When live events have been there, reports of fantastic fans have covered the reviews.

It would be great to see the company break new ground and head to Stockholm. There isn’t much in the way of massive arenas in Sweden but, at 13, 000 capacity, the Avicii Arena would be more than up to the task.

The more intimate atmosphere would be great for a Backlash, giving the crowd ample area to make some noise.

Honolulu, Hawaii

Okay, this is a bit of a cheat, but Hawaii is outside of the continental United States and needs to have a big show come to town, so it counts.

There hasn’t been much in the way of WWE making its way out to the islands. It is a shame because there is a ton of history with wrestling out Hawaii way.

Sure, as with other cities on this list, WWE has been there with only live events. It is time to bring a big show across the ocean.

Hawaii may not have the history that other islands in the Pacific have but there is still a strong wrestling connection. That plus a rich cultural history that WWE could use to promote the event.

Hawaii is also home to Aloha Stadium. While currently under construction, the stadium does hold a capacity of 50,000, which would be perfect for a show like SummerSlam.

It would be a great way to debut the new stadium when it is revamped and ready to go.

Tokyo, Japan

Live events, and even one PLE, Beast in the East, have made their way to the Land of the Rising Sun. This is all well and good, but it has been a while, and WWE needs to go back.

Professional wrestling has been a huge part of the Japanese culture. Companies such as NJPW, All-Japan Pro Wrestling, Dragongate, and Pro Wrestling Noah have dominated the landscape and even produced greats that have made their way to WWE.

With WWE developing working relationships with other companies, it would be great to see them combine with these groups for a PLE in Tokyo. We can mention a PLE in Tokyo without a venue to do it, and the Tokyo Dome would be ideal.

It has been home to some of the biggest shows in wrestling history. Adding a show the caliber of SummerSlam or WrestleMania would be a huge talking point for WWE.
