Preview: AEW Collision (7/20/24) - Mystery Star to Debut

AEW Collision looks set for another exciting show this week including the debut of mystery star Hologram, the return of Darby Allin to in-ring action, and much more, live from Arlington, TX. Here’s what’s announced:

AEW Collision Announced Card Thus Far:

– Darby Allin vs The Beast Mortos

– Hologram to debut

– AEW World Trios Championship: The Patriarchy vs The Bang Bang Gang

– Lumberjack Match: Deonna Purazzo vs Thunder Rosa

– Skye Blue vs Hikaru Shida

Hologram Debuts

In perhaps what will be the most anticipated segment ahead of the show, Hologram will finally debut. In last week’s edition of Collision, fans saw the second vignette featuring the debuting Hologram.

The clip hinted again at the unknown entity’s arrival, which has now been confirmed to take place this week on Saturday’s show. The brief follow-up video for the mystery wrestler ended with the words “next week” and now many are excited to see what his initial direction will be.

With it now confirmed not to be Ricochet or a swerve to reveal anyone else, we will likely find more about who he is and discover his place on the card more generally upon arrival. PWInsider stated that Tony Khan personally devised the new luchador character named ‘Hologram’ and, because of Khan’s personal involvement, it could be that he plays an immediate major role, potentially inserted into a mid-card title scene or even into Blood & Guts next week.

Darby Allin vs The Beast Mortos

In a huge match announced for Saturday, Darby Allin will return to in-ring action for the first time since his brutal showing in the Anarchy in the Arena match nearly 2 months ago at Double or Nothing. After both in and out of the ring struggles, from being run over by a bus, breaking his nose, and eventually being dangled from his feet above the ring in AITA, Darby seems to have made a startling recovery and looks likely to be an added man to Team AEW for next week’s Blood & Guts match.

Therefore, in his classic Darby way, he will no doubt be looking to jump right back in the deep end, and if he wants physicality, there is no opponent more suited than The Beast Mortos. If there was ever a match billed as ‘for the sickos’, this might be a good contender…

The Patriarchy vs The Bang Bang Gang – AEW World Trios Titles

Also on the show, the Bang Bang Gang (Juice Robinson & The Gunns) will face The Patriarchy (Christian Cage, Nick Wayne, and Killswitch) in a trios match for the vacant AEW World Trios Championships. This match comes after Jay White and The Gunns were stripped of the titles on the July 13 edition of the show.

Many saw this as an unfair vacating of the titles but I’m sure that angst is long forgotten with the announcement of this match, we can expect a heavy hitting, lightning-fast matchup, and potentially a new set of champions on the way.

Deonna Purazzo vs Thunder Rosa in a Lumberjack Match, Skye Blue vs Hikaru Shida Announced

Two women’s matches have also been announced for the Saturday night show and this one is a marquee matchup for regular Collision viewers. This match is set to be the huge payoff match between Thunder Rosa and Deonna Purazzo after weeks of discontent between the pair.

Rosa challenged Purrazzo to a lumberjack match in last week’s episode, saying that she was tired of running away from Purrazzo, and the match was finally set.

The other match features the ever-iconic 3-time AEW Women’s Champion, Hikaru Shida, who accepted a challenge from Skye Blue on social media in the past few days. She is looking for redemption following her defeat to Mariah May in the Owen Hart Foundation Cup Semi-Final last Friday.
