Making a Case for Drew McIntyre to Win or Lose at WWE Clash at the Castle

A WWE Clash at the Castle 2024 graphic featuring Drew McIntyre and Damian Priest.

Why Drew McIntyre should win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship & Why Should Damian Priest Retain

WWE King and Queen of the Ring brought us a solid night of entertainment. Great matches and great moments littered the evening. It was a special night that also had its sights on the future.

It was announced During the broadcast that Drew McIntyre would be Damian Priest’s challenger at Clash at the Castle on June 15th. Priest and McIntyre had been engaged in a war of words, so this was not a shocking announcement, but it was still one that got the blood going nonetheless.

Clash at the Castle emanates from Drew’s hometown of Glasgow, Scotland. The crowd reaction alone will make this match a must-watch but there are so many other factions to consider. Does WWE pull the rug out from under Priest before his reign starts? Do they dare have McIntyre fall in the main event two years in a row? Let’s look at the case for both of these scenarios below.

Case For Drew McIntyre Winning:

As we already touched on, this PLE is coming to us live from Glasgow, Scotland, the hometown of the Scottish Psychopath. It would seem almost impossible to have Drew staring up at the lights as the match came to a finish.

This is not the Vince McMahon era where hometown heroes are constantly jobbed out. Drew emerging victorious would create one of the biggest reactions in the history of the company. How could WWE pass on this moment that would live on forever?

Also, Drew never really got his chance at a run with the world championship, in front of an audience anyway. Sure, he won the World Championship at WrestleMania, but he immediately got embarrassed.

It moved his program with CM Punk along but did nothing to help his character. Luckily, McIntyre is so incredibly talented that he recovered. A second major loss in 3 months could be a setback he may not recover from.

So far Priest’s run has been a failure. He hasn’t been given much to work with and his segments haven’t translated well. In a time when business is booming it might not be a great idea to stick with Priest for long. Especially when McIntyre is doing some of the best work of his career.

Lastly, Gunther and SummerSlam potentially await the winner of this match. Who in their right mind wouldn’t want to see Drew McIntyre and Gunther go to battle once more? They have put on 5-star matches in the past and it would be great to see that at The Biggest Party of the Summer.

Case for Damian Priest Retaining:

As disappointing as Priest’s reign has been, it is not all of his doing. He hasn’t been given much to work with but has shown life as of late. His promos opposite McIntyre have shown potential and given the time he could do some great work in the main event.

If he loses to McIntyre, he very well could get lost in the shuffle of main-event talent and soon not be a viable contender. Hurting his character and effectively ruining all the weight that WWE has put behind him.

Priest is also in need of a huge win. Since winning the championship he hasn’t had anything in the way of defenses. If WWE wants to have his reign mean something he needs a notable win. Going over in Glasgow would be a massive deal for Priest and give him a much-needed win. It would also go a long way to getting him over as a heel.

Damian Priest would also present a fresh opponent for Gunther. The two men have spent a limited time in the ring, and from what we saw on Monday Night Raw, there might be something there. It would be an intriguing matchup that would present a unique pairing, one that we haven’t seen before. Heading into SummerSlam the two men could create something special.

Of course, this article can’t be written without mentioning CM Punk. The Second City Saint is going to be a thorn in McIntyre’s side and wouldn’t pass up on a chance to cost him another championship reign. It would further their feud and set something up for SummerSlam. It would be a way to get Priest his win without hurting McIntyre.
