Free Otis: The WWE Fan Movement For Otis To Let Go Of Gable

Otis has emerged as the overwhelming fan favorite following Chad Gable’s heel turn and plight to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Gable’s new trait for dressing down the Alpha Academy has hit a nerve. When Gable humiliates Maxxine Dupri, fans are amused. When he mocks Akira Tozawa, fans are unmoved. 

But when he calls Otis a disappointment fans, are heartbroken, apoplectic, and enraged. Gable is also forcing Otis to hurt fellow WWE superstars so he can win matches. Otis has been physically emotional and torn over whether to do what he’s told or what he thinks is right. 

Free Otis 

Some have plastered demands to ‘Free Otis’ or at least ‘Chad Be Nice To Otis’ to signs and held them aloft in arenas. If Gable unleashes one more slap across Otis’s face, it’s likely a ‘leave Britney alone’ TikTok trend will break out. But it isn’t just in arenas across America and Saudi Arabia where the ‘let’s go Otis’ chants have been deafening.

Many have taken to social media to call for Otis to let go of his long-term friendship with Gable and strike out on his own. Otis is torn as to what to do. Listen to his friend even though he doesn’t agree with him, or end a friendship. Even the WWE Raw broadcaster USA Network has had to get involved. 

WWE Raw Commentator Pat McAfee can’t stay silent either.

 

Why Do We Love Otis?

The main question is why do WWE fans love Otis so much that his mistreatment garners the loudest responses on WWE Raw? Firstly, just look at him. As wide as he is tall, Otis has a unique look that is perfect for the wrestling world. The “Human Treetrunk” could be a one-dimensional heel but his charisma and unique offense make him insanely fun to watch.

The gyrating, the shaking, and the dancing make it impossible to take your eyes off Otis when he’s on WWE TV. Then there’s his incredible version of the worm – the caterpillar. Otis is a man of few words but everything he does say is hilarious due to his delivery and comic timing.

Recently Gable has forced Otis to abandon his tag team career so that he can focus on winning the WWE Intercontinental Championship. Gable has also banned Otis from performing the caterpillar. Otis is being held back, as well as humiliated, and fans aren’t happy about it. 

This fan support shows the WWE Universe is dying for Otis to stop loyally following Gable and stand up for himself.

 

When Will Otis Free Himself?

Otis is the only member of the Alpha Academy that has interfered on Gable’s behalf. Dupri and Tozawa both refuse. Otis proved he is Gable’s No.1 Guy by reluctantly clotheslining Sami Zayn to gift Gable a win on WWE Raw a few weeks ago. 

But even Zayn can’t stay mad at Otis.

Otis attempted to interfere on Gable’s behalf at WWE King & Queen of the Ring but accidentally hit Gable. Many thought this would act as the spark for Otis to run free. But it’s only made things worse. Gable has become even more abusive and overbearing and Otis still feels he can’t leave him.

Many fans find the storyline heartbreaking to watch but – like a gripping soap opera – don’t want it to end. The support for Otis is growing with each day, as Gable becomes more and more hated. When things finally come to a head and we get the inevitable Otis vs. Gable match we are likely to see a babyface/ heel reaction like no other.

At this point, the match is too big to happen anywhere other than a Big Four PLE. SummerSlam in August seems the sensible bet. This gives us a lot more heartbreaking twists and turns until an August showdown. Otis vs. Gable has everything it needs in place to be one of the biggest matches going into WWE SummerSlam.
