Preview: AEW Dynamite (01/17/24)

AEW World Championship Samoa Joe vs. HOOK Match Graphic

It’s once again time for AEW Dynamite, and we have an awesome night to look forward to! We have only announced three matches so far, but all of them are title matches! We’ll also hear from the returning mustached Young Bucks, who returned last week confronting Sting and Darby Allin. The first title match will see the ROH World Tag Team Championships on the line as Gates of Agony and Brian Cage defend their belts against the “Bang Bang Gang” Bullet Club Gold’s Jay White, Austin Gunn, and Colten Gunn.

Christian Cage will defend his TNT Championship as he faces Dustin Rhodes. Our focus will be on the AEW World Championship as Samoa Joe hopes to make his first defense a successful, but he’ll face off with FTW Champion HOOK!

Can HOOK become the next homegrown World Champion?

Samoa Joe has looked like an absolute monster, and his promo last week solidified he’s not planning to lose the AEW World Championship soon. However, I don’t think HOOK setting his sights on Joe’s newly won AEW World Championship was in his plans either.

Just glancing at these two, you would think this is a David vs. Goliath-style match. That’s not the case; these are two badasses looking to throw the other guy across the ring and choke them out. These are two dominant forces going head to head until someone yields.

HOOK has many great things going for him heading into his first World Championship match. He’s younger, has an intimidating aura around him, and his aggression in the ring is reminiscent of his father, Taz. He’s benefited from being under the learning tree of not just his father but the likes of Cody Rhodes, Mark Sterling, QT Marshall, Pat Buck, and “Glacier” Ray Lloyd.

The two biggest things Samoa Joe has working for him in this match are his experience and versatility. That will make the difference in this match. However, I believe HOOK stands a better chance than most are giving him. I could even see him being screwed out of the win and see him moving forward, boasting that the FTW Championship was the true world title of AEW. Regardless, it will be a great match, and I look forward to watching this war.
