Tony Khan Wants to Push Darius Martin in 2022

In an interview with CBS Sports‘ Shakiel Mahjouri, AEW boss Tony Khan revealed that there is a certain injured professional wrestler he would like to push in 2022. As many of us will be aware, Dante Martin has become one of the breakout talents of 2021. The gifted performer with an almost superhero like athletic ability has shone throughout the second-half of 2021 in particular and is, no doubt, looking to continue his newfound success in 2022. However, Dante’s older brother, and one-half of Top Flight – the team of the Martin brothers which debuted in AEW in November of 2020 – Darius Martin, has been touted by Tony Khan as one he would like to push in 2022.

“I think for a variety of reasons, there’s a number of people I’m excited to feature in the coming year… For example, it was completely out of everyone’s control, but Darius Martin has been out injured and I think he’s tremendous. I would love to get him back soon and teaming with his brother, Dante. Dante has become a big star and I think they were tremendous as a tag team.

“When the injury happened, Darius was 21 and Dante was 19. Now Dante is 20 and has been featured so much on Dynamite and Rampage and has now been a main eventer on Dynamite. When Darius comes back, I think he’s somebody that could come in and be great for us. So I’m really excited about him in particular. That’s an important name to keep an eye on.”

Darius Martin succumbed to injury in March of this year – suffering a serious ACL injury which required major surgery. In his absence, younger brother Dante has become a regularly featured part of AEW Dynamite and Rampage – leaving many to consider whether we would ever see Top Flight together again. However, as per Tony, he remains very high on Darius and no doubt wants him to return to the position he left when he got injured. Tony is right to rate the older Martin so highly too as, much like his younger brother, he is a phenomenally gifted athlete and an asset to any company.

Even with all of the big named signings this year – CM Punk, Adam Cole, Bryan Danielson etc – Dante has remained one of the most talked about names and there is no doubt that, had Darius not suffered an injury, he, too, would be alongside Dante as one of the more talked about names in AEW. With Darius now being mere weeks to a couple of months away from a return to the ring, we might just see a Top Flight reunion – with serious creative backing – sooner, rather than later.
