The Mysterios (Dominik and Rey Mysterio) have captured the SmackDown Tag Team Championships at WrestleMania Backlash. They finally overcame the Dirty Dawgs, that being the team of Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode, to begin their first reign with the titles. This is a significant step in the young career of Dominik Mysterio, who has now claimed his first title within the WWE. They become the first-ever father/son pairing to win the WWE tag team championships.
A Long Time Coming for the Mysterios
The Mysterios became a team in mid-2020. The entire Mysterio Family, including Rey’s wife Angie and daughter Aalyah, became embroiled in a feud with Seth Rollins and then-cultist acolyte, Murphy. For much of 2020, the “Monday Night Messiah”, as he was then referred, would torment the Mysterios with the assistance of Murphy – going so far as to gouge out the eye of the Mysterio patriarch for reasons still not clear. Thankfully, Rey’s eye grew back and with son Dominik, he has managed to keep sight of the title that has alluded them for much of the past year: the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.
Dominik is still only 24 and his booking as partner to his father has clearly been a clever method of protecting his flaws whilst allowing him to develop, working with such seasoned veterans as his father, Ziggler, and Roode, to name just three. He only had his big debut match last year, in a one-on-one match against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam. The young rookie is going on to great things and this first title win will now kick-start what has the potential to be a long, prosperous and promising future with the WWE. For now, he will continue honing his craft as one-half of the SmackDown Tag Team Champions.
What’s Next For The Dirty Dawgs?
The Dirty Dawgs have been a fun and interesting part of the SmackDown tag team division. Both men involved work tremendously well as cocky antagonists and should they remain a team, their experience will be valued within a young and ever-expanding division. That being said, the experience of both men as individuals would be greatly appreciated elsewhere on the roster. Cesaro is going to need someone new to feud with soon, Shinsuke Nakamura potentially, also. Regardless, their time as SmackDown Tag Team Champions is at an end and congratulations go out to The Mysterios!
