In the first match of the Royal Rumble, Shayna Baszler and New Jax dethroned dominant duo Charlotte Flair and Asuka, ending their reign at 42 days. It sadly wasn’t a clean win, as Jax pinned Flair after a loaded “Women’s Right” by an interfering Lacey Evan.
Charlotte has been having issues with Lacey since the “Sassy Southern Belle” seemingly became involved with Charlotte’s father, “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair. Ric and Lacey have been a thorn in “The Queens” side for weeks. The pair frequently taunt the legend’s daughter, with Ric costing Charlotte a match with Lacey.
The title change is somewhat surprising in that Lacey has her own partner in former Tag Team Champion Peyton Royce. Charlotte and Lacey squaring off seems to be the obvious path, but perhaps this could lead to a triple threat match with the Women’s Tag Team Championship at the center.
If nothing else, with Jax and Baszler beginning their second reign, the women’s tag team division has a strong team leading into WrestleMania season. There’s no shortage of options for the two-time champions; with Asuka and Charlotte having a strong case for a rematch, there’s the previously mentioned triple threat. One scenario I like is with Asuka still being the Raw Women’s Champion, maybe Lana returns as Charlotte’s partner to gain some measure of revenge for the months of torment.
No matter what, it’ll be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
