Prior to the main event of NXT’s New Year’s Evil show, William Regal talked to McKenzie Mitchell to discuss the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. And then he made a stunning reveal, as there won’t all be a men’s tournament but for the first time, there will be a Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Dexter Lumis held up a picture he designed of the official log.
ABOUT TIME.
Per #WWENXT GM @RealKingRegal, the WOMEN'S #DustyCup is coming your way, soon! #WeAreNXT #NXTNYE pic.twitter.com/D7btsuCPso
— WWE NXT (@WWENXT) January 7, 2021
The announcement comes following a year where the women’s division powered NXT through 2020, being the must-see attraction week in and week out. There are still plenty of details to be revealed, but the excitement should be high as some unique tag teams should be formed in hopes of winning the inaugural tournament. One would assume that the winner would earn an opportunity at the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships, along with taking home the Dusty Cup.
Certain tag teams seem to be layups, as Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez could enter as the favorites while Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell seem to be a shoo-in to team as well. Perhaps Xia Li and the mystery figure could team up in the Dusty Cup to put a mega curve into the already uncertain tournament.
One has to wonder if any main roster talents will see the opportunity to enter the first-ever event, which could make for an even more enticing Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
