While AEW Dynamite is the crown jewel through which AEW is built, the company also relies on several other weekly YouTube shows to help advance stories, create additional character development and overall aid to the AEW fan experience. As AEW began without TV, the company even relied on their YouTube presence to build to their first PPV and it was a massive success. Today, AEW’s family of shows includes Being the Elite, which is managed and created by the Young Bucks and Brandon Cutler, Sammy’s Vlog, which is created by Sammy Guevara, and AEW DARK, which currently serves as AEW’s second in-ring wrestling show. Through this weekly series, we’ll be recapping all three, making sure that everyone is in the know of any developing stories taking place outside of Dynamite.
Being the Elite
The Truth is the Truth
Last week, Being the Elite introduced a new version of Matt Hardy. This week, that character continued as Hardy took credit for inventing the tag team style that allowed guys like the Young Bucks and the debuting Top Flight to exist, the groundwork on which AEW was founded and the concept of being fearless. Hardy even coined a new slogan: “The truth is the truth.” It will be interesting to see where Hardy takes this newest iteration of his gimmick.
A Slippery Situation
Michael Nakazawa and his baby oil continue to get credit for the hot Florida weather leading to wrestlers slipping off the ropes and turnbuckle. The latest victim was Trent, who received a DARK match with Nakazawa as a result. It’s been a smart strategy for AEW as Nakazawa’s story has now become he’s making people slip and wants them to come at him for revenge so he can get booked. Whatever it takes to get on the card.
A Dark Order Thanksgiving
John Silver and his band of merry misfits continue to be one of the best parts of Being the Elite and this week was no exception. Silver and crew even factored into three different segments. The first of which was focused around a gimmick that Nia Jax seems to have borrowed as Anna Jay continued her weekly run of pushing Stu Grayson into or over a table. The second segment was a Dark Order Thanksgiving in which all the members, including Colt Cabana, expressed their gratitude. Seeing Cabana in one of the Dark Order segments for the first time in awhile is interesting as his status with the group is still largely up in the air. But at least the gimmick of Cabana walking around with Michael Nakazawa’s face is finally over. As Evil Uno observed, it just wasn’t getting over. The third segment was about Silver defending his BTE Championship, but more on that below.
Anger Management for Marks
Frankie Kazarian’s recent BTE gimmick has seen him chastise wrestlers for using what would be called industry terms. The most recent victim has been Brandon Cutler, who this week was caught looking for spot monkeys in the bathroom. Kaz’s rage at wrestlers acting like marks is playing into this idea that he needs anger management but he’s rrefused and gotten even angrier when it’s brought up. While this is likely not to make it to TV, the idea of an unhinged, loose cannon in Kazarian could certainly be a welcome change of pace for SCU.
The One Chip Challenge
The goal was simple. Eat one spicy as all hell chip without drinking milk and receive a shot at Silver’s title as a result. Aaron Solow, Ricky Starks, Luchasaurus, Super Panda and Trent all competed in the event, which spanned nearly 15 minutes without a winner as everyone avoided the urge to drink the milk and end their suffering. The contest ended when it was revealed Starks hadn’t eaten his full chip and as the former champ, Trent was offered first right at the opportunity to eat Starks’ leftover piece and earn a title rematch. He did so and next week, Trent will face John Silver in a mustard packet throwing challenge.
Sammy’s Vlog
Inner Circle Cribs
As those who watched Dynamite last week know, MJF’s offer to take his new Inner Circle teammates to Las Vegas was not an empty gesture. To sell the bit, AEW actually had the Inner Circle film from Vegas complete with an Elvis impersonator and a trip to Ceasar’s Palace. That’s where AEW Cribs was born, a five or so minute segment featuring Sammy Guevara, Jake Hager and Ortiz giving viewers a tour of their swanky hotel digs. Plus, there was also a guest appearance from Konnan in what seemed an attempt to replicate a bit from the Hangover.
The Saga of Fuego Del Sol
One of the main stars of the vlog in recent weeks has been Fuego Del Sol and his neverending quest to hit the tornado DDT. Fuego factored heavily into this week’s episode as well as he took part in another edition of tshirt (loves Fuego) vs suit (hates Fuego) Cody, got advice from legends and continued to advance his ongoing feud with QT Marshall, that should result in a DARK match soon enough.
Marko’s Descent into Madness
Not that long ago, babyface Marko Stunt underwent a vlog character change when his dark secret was revealed. Since then, Stunt has been on a mission to keep his best friend Sam all to himself. In doing so, Stunt has come up against Griff Garrison, who he beat up a few weeks ago and presumably drugged this week. It all led up to a shocking finish to the episode in which Guevara was seen being smothered by a pillow and hints being dropped that Stunt may have been the culprit behind the attack. While none of this is AEW canon (though Stunt and Guevara did finally get the match they had been advocating for over a year for), Stunt’s storyline on the vlog has been nonetheless intriguing. We’ll see what the next chapter has in store.
AEW Dark
Peter Avalon WINS
Peter Avalon has finally got a win under his belt after he defeated Fuego Del Sol. Avalon and Brandon Cutler had been in a feud recently over who would be the first to get a victory in AEW and while Cutler won that race Avalon finally has a victory of his own.
