On Wednesday night, NXT included the first-ever match between Io Shirai and Tegan Nox for Shirai’s NXT Women’s Championship. As the main event of the night, they got the better part of a 25-minute battle, going back and forth on their way to an excellent match. The champion Shirai managed to walk away with her championship despite the incredible effort by Nox. After the match as Shirai was celebrating her win, Dakota Kai had other plans to establish herself as the next woman up.

Absolutely blindsided by “The Captain of Team Kick,” but it was only a matter of time before Dakota Kai attempted to get what she believes should be hers. For those who may not remember, Kai has been saying for months that she wanted the next shot at the NXT Women’s Championship as she continuously piled up wins. When she finally received an opportunity to win and face Io Shirai, she was pinned in the middle of the ring by her former best friend Tegan Nox, leading to Wednesday’s match.
Something telling is that she instead waited for the end of the match instead of trying to stop Nox from winning. It’s clear that the only thing that matters to Kai is that she wants to win the title. It does not matter who she faces. This match could be destined for the next NXT TakeOver event.
