On the first-ever NXT version of The Great American Bash, plenty went down to give even more excitement for the future of the brand. On Night One Wednesday night, four of NXT’s best women went head-to-head in a Fatal 4-Way elimination match to crown the new No.1 Contender for Io Shirai and her NXT Women’s Championship. And despite weeks of tease out of Dakota Kai, she came up short and it was “The Girl with the Shiniest Wizard,” Tegan Nox, who came out with the victory, crowning herself the No. 1 Contender.

For Nox, it was a long road to that moment to finally get an NXT Women’s Championship match after years of hardship due to injuries that held her back from her rise to stardom. Now, she has a chance to steal the show with Io Shirai whenever they get to go head-to-head.
The match came to the finish after Mia Yim managed to eliminate Candice LeRae first. Then it was Dakota Kai who ended Yim’s hopes of getting another championship match. It was down to the one time best friends, now fiercest rivals. Kai hit her with a parade of devastating moves, but it was the Shiniest Wizard that got the last laugh as it was hit and allowed Tegan Nox to capture the three count to win.

If you have kept track, Shirai vs. Nox was a match that could have been in the second Mae Young Classic. It would have been the semifinals bout, but due to Nox’s injury, it never was able to reach that possibility. Two years later, they will fight for the NXT Women’s Championship. We’d say that’s a pretty good replacement for what could have been.
