Preview: WWE NXT (5/20/20)

NXT

WWE NXT returns with yet another exciting episode of its weekly broadcast.  With only two segments announced so far, this preview will be updated as more is announced.  So far we have the continuation of the Cruiserweight Tournament and a mega women’s main event.  As has been the case for a while now, this will be another behind-closed-doors edition of NXT.  No crowds, just wrestling.  Without further ado, let’s dive right in!

Crunch Time In The Cruiserweight Tournament

We have two big cruiserweight matches to look forward to.  Drake Maverick‘s (1-1) story has been one of the driving-forces behind the success of this tournament.  Released from the WWE during “Black Wednesday” last month, he has been on a mission to prove himself worthy of staying during this tournament.  Though losing to Jake Atlas in the opener, he has since defeated Tony Nese.  In KUSHIDA (2-0) he is facing someone who not only defeated Tony Nese, but Jake Atlas too.  KUSHIDA will no doubt be Maverick’s biggest challenge yet.  Akira Tozawa (2-0) has been on a roll.  A cruiserweight division original, he has defeated Isaiah Scott and Jack Gallagher – whilst being used on RAW as enhancement talent.  His opponent is the mysterious El Hijo del Fantasma (1-1), who has twice fought off the parking lot’s masked men.  We don’t know much about the former King Cuerno, but we know not all is what it appear.  Tune-in to NXT to find out more!

Io Shirai vs Rhea Ripley

NXT

Rhea Ripley has returned to NXT to claim what she lost to Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania XXXVI; her NXT Women’s Championship.  Since losing her championship, Charlotte has been appearing on SmackDown, indicating that she has hijacked the title from NXT.  Ripley is a long-time NXT performer and will no doubt want to return the title to its rightful home.  Standing in her way, however, is arguably the best women’s wrestler in the world in Io Shirai.  She never lost her title match against Charlotte last month, with the match ending in disqualification.  She must win here to ensure that she remains in the title picture and isn’t forgotten about with Ripley’s return.  A triple threat is the best concluding scenario in this feud, so let’s hope that’s what we get.  Tune-in this Wednesday to WWE NXT on USA Network at 8PM EST.
