Developed in 2018 as a recreation of SNK’s The King of Fighters arcade game series which first debuted in 1994, Netmarble’s KOF ALL STARS is described as a ‘beat ’em up role-playing game,’ where characters build a team and encounter foes throughout each stage of their journey until they ultimately reach the final boss.
In the case of the WWE superstar crossover, the third for KOF ALL STAR following previous events with characters from Samurai Shodown and Tekken, the wrestlers find themselves invited to take part in a tournament by an unknown entity. The first mode focuses on the three current superstars, Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch and Kofi Kingston, while two additional modes feature stories surrounding the Rock and John Cena. The story with the Undertaker is unknown as that mode has not yet been released. In all, there are eight playable characters you can unlock as both Cena and Rock’s characters come in two versions. The characters also come complete with their entrance music and stylized commentary from none other than Michael Cole.
“Each Superstar’s appearance, mannerisms and move-sets have been faithfully recreated for players to experience,” the WWE release explains regarding game play for KOF ALL STAR. “Beyond securing WWE Superstars for their roster, fans also have several WWE-themed events, dungeons, and much more to take part in, including:
• Time Attack Mode: Players can play Time Attack Mode with WWE Superstars
• WWE-Themed Summon Banner: Players can obtain Superstars via two new Banners
• Super Mission: Players can obtain ‘The Rock’ by completing a new Super Mission
• WWE-Themed Dungeons: Kofi Kingston is obtainable by gathering rewards from a Rush Event Dungeon; there is a WWE-themed Mini Dungeon to get various rewards too
• WWE-Themed Roulette: Players can get ‘John Cena’ via the new Roulette Event.”
KOF ALLSTAR offers fast-paced fighting action as players face off against a series of enemies, final bosses and rival fighter teams along the way. This exciting game play features access to over 130 fighters to collect and play as, pulling characters from all prior KOF games dating back to the series’ first from 1994.
“WWE and The King of Fighters have been entertaining people around the world for decades, so bringing these two franchises together in our game is something truly special for us and the players,” said Shin Hwa Cho, Executive Producer of Netmarble, in WWE’s press release. “We worked closely with WWE to provide a truly authentic experience, bringing the likeness and moves of each Superstar to our game. We know our players are going to love the experience.”
