NXT To Hold Tournament To Crown Interim Cruiserweight Champion

The world is on pause right now due to the COVID-19 virus, the WWE continues to push on business as usual to provide entertainment for their fans around the world. That includes NXT, as they will air NXT TakeOver-level matches over the next number of weeks. William Regal joined “The Bump” today to make a huge announcement regarding the NXT Cruiserweight Championship, which is currently held by Jordan Devlin. A tournament will be had to crown the interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion while Devlin, who is unable to return from the UK to the United States as of now because of COVID-19, will remain champion and face the winner down the road to combine both titles.

This adds yet another layer to the NXT brand that they didn’t have 24 hours ago. A tournament to highlight some of the best Cruiserweights they have to offer can not only be enticing but bring a lot of light to the fans in these tough times. Devlin remaining champion also means there is no definite chance this interim champion will ever be the true champion. So until those two fights, fans should appreciate the attempt to bring entertaining cruiserweight action in the coming weeks.

When it comes to the possibilities of who may enter their name into the tournament, the first man that comes to mind is the former champion, Lio Rush. Rush has attempted to get his title back several times since losing it but has come up short. He is among the best talents in the entire company when it comes to natural athleticism, so he could be seen as a favorite. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott has been in the hunt before and this tournament may be what puts him on the map to finally grab the gold and be the interim champion. Tyler Breeze is one option that fans would certainly get behind as he is one of the best-underutilized talents that WWE has had. Breeze can be that underdog favorite to have a “Cinderella” run.

Other names to consider: Tony Nese, Oney Lorcan, Jack Gallagher, The Brian Kendrick
