ROH to Crown New ROH World Women’s Champion

Ring of Honor (ROH) had a subpar year in 2019 as it struggled to replace the star power of the departed Elite (Young Bucks, Cody Rhodes & “Hangman” Adam Page), but going back further than that, they’ve struggled with Women of Honor, their women’s division. But they’ve managed to sign or re-sign several key names, including “The Villain” Marty Scurll, and they’ve begun adding some fresh names to the women’s division in the past few months, including Nicole Savoy, Maria Manic, Lady Frost and “Session Moth” Martina. Reports have emerged that the booking committee has been overhauled, with Scurll leading the main creative and Jonathan Gresham assuming control of the women’s division.

With fresh minds in creative, it appears that Women of Honor is no more – at least in name. The women’s division is getting rebooted and that includes a new ROH World Women’s Championship, replacing the Women of Honor Championship. In a press release on Wednesday, ROH announced plans to crown the first ROH World Women’s Champion by tournament, beginning on April 24 at an event entitled Quest for Gold.

To emphasize ROH’s commitment to women’s wrestling, a new Ring of Honor Women’s World Championship has been created. This title will replace the Women of Honor Title and carry the utmost prestige as only the best competitors will earn its gold.

The tournament to crown the inaugural champion begins with eight first-round matches at “Quest For Gold” on Friday, April 24 at Philadelphia’s 2300 Arena. The tournament will feature talent from all over the world, including some new faces who have never competed in ROH.

“Quest For Gold” tickets go on sale Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. ET for HonorClub members and Friday, Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. ET for the general public.

The first women’s match in ROH history took place in 2002, the company’s first year in existence. In the ensuing years, some of the best women’s wrestlers in the sport competed in an ROH ring, including Sara Del Rey, Mickie James, Amazing Kong, Mercedes Martinez, MsChif, Cheerleader Melissa and Daizee Haze, who all paved the way for the current generation of female talent in ROH.

The ROH Women’s World Championship will take women’s wrestling in ROH to the highest level. Don’t miss your opportunity to witness history in the making at Quest for Gold!

The move effectively strips Kelly Klein of her WOH Championship. Klein was in her third reign as WOH Champion, before ROH made the decision not to renew her contract. The WOH Championship was first won by Sumie Sakai in April of 2018, and was also held by Stardom‘s Maya Iwatani and Angelina Love.
