IMPACT Wrestling is going back in time for a special, one-of-a-kind episode, “Throwback Throwdown,” set to air on Tuesday, November 26th, 2019. The episode features some of the top stars of one of the hottest territories from the 1980s, Impact Provincial Wrestling Federation (IPWF). Let’s set the stage.
The year is early 1980-something and professional wrestling is just about to enter its boom, the period that would later be referred to as the Golden Age. Thanks to the expansion of cable television and promoters ready to take on the world, wrestling as we knew it was about to change. A young Vince McMahon had yet to host the first-ever WrestleMania but was well on his way of changing the face of professional wrestling. Meanwhile, territories abounded as the World Wrestling Federation, American Wrestling Association and National Wrestling Alliance all tried to keep their piece of the pie before ultimately looking to have the whole pie all to themselves.
One of the NWA’s finest territories was a promotion known as Impact Provincial Wrestling Federation, ran and operated by two of the smartest minds in the industry. And in 1980-something, these men decided to put on a very special event from the Don Kolov Arena in Toronto with scheduled matches to include a blindfold match, special Bodyslam Challenge, and the premier prize of the industry on the line as International Commonwealth Television Champion Julian Cumberbund would defend his title against Downtown Daddy Brown in a Loser Leaves Town match. Early speculation suggests this could be the card of the decade and one that would inspire founder of the newly created Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer, to perhaps issue the first-ever five-star match rating in history.
Also scheduled for Throwback Throwdown is the electrifying debut of the hot newcomer and top wrestling prospect, Johnny Swinger, a special interview segment of the Cock Pit with Captain Joystick and Miss Mile High, and an eight-person battle pitting some of the fine ladies of IPWF against some rough-and-tumble gentlemen.
Flash forward to 2019…
In all seriousness, this is a very real thing. For one night only, IMPACT Wrestling will be stepping back in time to pay homage to the Golden Age of professional wrestling with IPWF. Much as WWE did a few years back with Southpaw Regional Wrestling, IMPACT wrestlers are set to don new personas while taking part in matches/exhibitions that characterize territory wrestling back in the 1980s. According to IMPACT Executive Vice President Scott D’Amore, “I’m sure Throwback Throwdown will be talked about for quite some time and perhaps become an annual Thanksgiving week tradition.”
