Match Point is an on-going series at Last Word on Pro Wrestling, where we look at intriguing matchups in indie wrestling and beyond. They may be dream matches, first-time matchups, or hotly anticipated rematches. For over a decade these have been two of the best junior heavyweights in the world. For the first time ever they will collide as PAC takes on Amazing Red in round one of the British J Cup.
A match that seemed unlikely to ever happen when Amazing Red announced his retirement earlier this year between two junior heavyweights that have been among the best in the world at what they do since the mid 00’s. Their careers took very different paths as PAC went to Japan and then WWE while Amazing Red won titles in Total Nonstop Action (TNA) and outside of a stint in All Japan Pro Wrestling stayed mostly in North America. Now in 2019 their paths finally cross in RevPro’s British J Cup and the world finally gets to see PAC vs Amazing Red.
PAC
PAC debuted all the way back in 2004 and after a few years showcasing his high flying skills all over the UK made his way to Dragon Gate, a Japanese promotion that hosts exclusively junior heavyweights, where he would be a regular until signing with the WWE. During his time in Japan he won multiple titles in Dragon Gate most notably while he was a member of WORLD-1 and even had time to go to Pro Wrestling Guerilla to win the PWG tag team championships. His time in WWE saw him become a more refined performer as he won multiple championships including the NXT and Cruiserweight championships. PAC became a big star when he WALKED OUT on the WWE and popped back up in Dragon Gate where he would finally capture their top title the Open The Dream Gate Championship and would be unbeaten for months before finally falling to Ben-K. Before WWE he was an exciting high flyer and since his stint there he has refined himself as someone who is more well rounded. While Red will take this one to the skies expect PAC to try and be more methodical and pull out his high-risk moves when it will have the most impact.
Amazing Red
Amazing Red debuted in 2001 and was involved in both TNA and Ring Of Honor in their early days. Red was ahead of his time and was a three-time X-Division champion and won cruiserweight championships all over the US. Approaching almost two decades as a wrestler Red has been going through a career revival in 2019, which is strange considering he retired earlier this year, but when New Japan Pro Wrestling came calling to offer him a match Will Ospreay he proved that he’s still got it and put on a highly rated match with Ospreay. Now Red continues his career revival with another highly anticipated dream match with PAC as he is sure to get the treatment he deserves by the UK crowd who haven’t ever had the chance to see the indie legend live.
PAC vs Amazing Red, a dream match between two of the best junior heavyweights of their era who have had two very different career paths. November 24th, 2019 at the famous York Hall in London, these two do battle for the first, and possibly last time.
