Irish eyes are smiling on London, England’s Pro Wrestling EVE, the top women’s promotion in Europe. On Saturday night at EVE Check Yourself, the tandem of Debbie Keitel & Valkyrie – collectively known as the Woke Queens – won the vacant EVE Tag Team Championships after defeating the veteran duo of US indie veteran Mercedes Martinez and UK indie star Laura Di Matteo for the titles. The titles were vacated after the inaugural champions Erin Angel & Jetta handed over the belts on September 27 – at Check Yourself, Erin Angel announced the reason for the relinquishing was due to her new pregnancy.

The Woke Queens features two of the top stars in Irish women’s wrestling. Valkyrie is the reigning Over The Top (OTT) Women’s Champion and Pro Wrestling Ulster (PWU) Women’s Champion, as well as the Fight Factory Pro Wrestling (FFPW) Irish Junior Heavyweight Champion. She started out in Celtic Championship Wrestling (CCW) in 2015 and in the past two years has become an emerging star in the Irish and UK indie scene, working with Fight Club: PRO as well, and on mainland Europe with Germany’s Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw). Debbie Keitel is another Irish star on the rise, who’s become a regular with OTT as well as Scotland’s Fierce Females. She’s also worked in Japan with Gatoh Move, training under EVE regular Emi Sakura, who recently appeared for All Elite Wrestling. Shortly after NXT TakeOver: Cardiff, she worked a match for NXT UK.
The win gives Ireland two-thirds of the EVE gold, as the reigning EVE Champion is Belfast, Ireland’s Rhia O’Reilly, recently into her third reign as EVE Champion. The other EVE title, the EVE International Championship, is held by Southampton, England’s Jamie Hayter.
